Exactly.. My E36 M3 needed another cog as the 5 speed manual begged to be shifted one more time when in 5th.. 70 mph would be like 3300 rpms..
Geared low and perfect for city.. But it was not a relaxed hwy cruiser..

Agreed.. Never feels underpowered while cruising.. And always a crisp throttle response.. More than adequate power.. But you need to work it to keep it on boil to get the most out of it.. It's not effortless power.. Requires the right gear and rpms when you want to push it hard. Which is part of the fun..

So you know you can't drive the car through it's entire rev range yet because you're not done with the break-in period, and you decide to come here and complain about the gearing? Looks like you need to do more driving and less typing. You're driving the car without the most important 3600 rpm. You're not allowed to have an opinion about power yet, go focus on the handling. -_-

What Raul said.. You are missing out on the best part of the rev range. Once you get through your break in period, keep your foot in it until redline at least a couple of times and see if your opinion changes. The key of this car is to keep the power on boil through a series of curves. It isn't easy, but, infinitely rewarding. It is similar to baseball in hitting a ball on the sweet spot of the bat.

Really, the car feels fine as long as you don't sit in the torque dip. Minimize your time in that and its much more enjoyable.

Still not fast though.

I just wish we had 500-1000 more rpms to make some more power.

It sucks that power takes a shit after 7k rpm.

In my first test drive on the highway I though fourth gear was enough. I didn't get a lot of time to play with it just initial "do I like it" drive.

Felt different than my 2001 Audi TT I used to have, though that was a turbo and it had a flat torque curve so not exactly apple to apple comparison on "the feels"

3rd gear tops at 75mph and 1st gear and 2nd gear can be super quick depending on if you slip the clutch right without wheelspin.

This pretty much sums it up. If you feel the same way after your break in period and you really have stretched out the legs then revert back to post #11

Yeah, they lacked the ovedrive gear of the home market cars. During high speed cruising I sometimes notice it too, but the straight six is so smooth that it gets away with it remarkably well.
