I got a base 13 it's great. Cheap and easy to modify, and if I decide to sell it down the road, I don't loose as much on it vs dealer installed options that are not going to work in ten years anyways. I have a lot of older cars 25+ years, I find the more gadgets on them the more of a hassle it is to track down problems........ Damn jaguars and their obsessive need for relays!

In your position, rent one for a week, if you like it go for the hot lava! Sounds like you would be fine with a base 13 model. Although you may have to go on a road trip to find an orange one.

Just an FYI:
Regarding 'leather' vs fabric seating. The following excerpt is taken from the Motor Trend mag, issue Dec 2013 about the Subaru Forester as "Best SUV".

"Hey look, cloth seats, and you get the idea that Subaru's not ashamed of them. Not every car needs to pretend to be a luxury item".

Jaguars - I don't suppose the Jag still uses Lucas Electronics the scurge of English cars of the past. But then, it is now a FORD Jaguar. At least it was at one time. Not sure of current ownership status.

There is also Sterling Silver Metallic (BRZ's). ... but not sure what you mean by "up front".

The only colors I've seen up front were black, whiteout, and firestorm. Whiteout is one of the best color to choose if you don't want to see swirls.

If you can wait and are OK with a used car, there will be a ton of 13's around from all the updside-down buyers who will trade just to have that useless crap that will do absolutely zero for the actual reason to get this car. Beware of mods, though.

In the 80s they started swapping over to Bosch. You get some weird mixes in jaguars......... No clue about more modern ones, way out of my price range.

Part of what I love about my FRS is the simplicity of it... There are very few knobs, dials, switches anywhere in the vehicle; two switches for power windows, no touch screen nav system, heat and ac run with three dials and two buttons. I totally agree everything else is useless crap that you don't need to enjoy a vehicle and is really just a distraction.

On the subject of colour... I usually steer people away from Lava since I like being one of the few who have one, but as long as you don't live in SW Ontario I don't mind.

I can't imagine this car in any other colour; black and white both show dirt like crazy, don't like the shade of blue they offer, you couldn't pay me to drive a silver/grey car like 75% of the world. That leaves red and orange, and the Hot Lava is far more unique. You're buying a unique vehicle, which will get lots of looks, might as well take it over the top and get it in orange.

Buy an FRS, I feel quite confident that you're gonna love this car. It's bare bones in all the right ways, and an absolute joy to drive.

Your post is detailed and specific. I am happy with my 2013 frs. But, if life had been different and I had not bought it 17 months ago, I would want the newer model with dual zone climate. For my wife and I, this feature would eliminate many "conversations". Seriously though, about everything thing else on the car, that you may want to change, can be changed easily through vast after market offerings. I don't regret my purchase and I am not going to trade it in for the newer model.

Want newer features - Get the newest and best.
Want great car at great price - Get new 2013 or gently/lightly used one for even better savings. I have seen a few with less than 5000 miles for 21-22k.

Good point. However, I've found that when my (over 55) wife goes into "hot flash mode", I best cool the whole cabin down ASAP ...... and keep my mouth shut .....

Is hot lava really that great a color? I was debating to choose between Asphalt or Hot Lava...

I after researching purchased a 2013. I've owned a few Toyotas and have had no issues with the electronic Bells and whistles over the years. And a Scion is still somewhat is a Toyota blended with a Subaru whom has also made some very nice performance cars. So with those factors I made my decision to purchase. I hope whatever decision you make that you will be truly happy with.
