Find a low mileage B14 Nissan 200sx.

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_200sx"]Nissan 200SX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Both the SE engine (the 1.6L GA16DE) and the SE-R engine (the 2.0L SR20DE) are absolute tanks.

Source: I had a 200SX SE. It was cheap to buy up front, easy to work on, parts were cheap, and I would get 36mpg+ on the highway.

Edit: You could also get a Sentra of the same year, it's basically the same platform but with 4 doors

1st generation Insights are awesome, they're what, 1700lbs dry? The gearing is super long too.

I always thought the old VX and HX Civics were neat little things. Lean burn motors (save gas but pollute a bit more whatever) and more highway friendly gears, can get 50mpg stock on the highway without much trouble.

Can get an 02-04 SVT Focus for that price anywhere from 4-7k. Great cars, super reliable.

I honestly think my old car, a 1993 Honda Accord, was one of the best inexpensive cars out there. Not only was it damn fun to drive and had a nice chassis, it returned excellent fuel economy and could romp through damn near everything. On top of that, I think it looked nice and parts for it were quite cheap. I would really consider that car.

Toyota Echo, they are indestructible and don't carry the premium used car price of a Honda.
