It says they kept the 200hp motor intact. Though I'm sure the wing is still functional. Necessary? Maybe, maybe not.

Yeah and if one added intake, exhaust, ect.. the motor is still intact. However horse power would be increased.

Even if they didnt add anything else and reduced the weight by what they did the spoiler would still serve a purpose. Even more so with it being so much lighter. So yeah it's not necessary. However I'm positive it helped them take time off their lap times.

Just an exhaust. Wing is functional. Im not a huge fan of it, but if its functional and considering this is a track only car, it doesnt bother me in the least.

It does have custom TRD exhaust that is pretty much a straight pipe, so I'm sure that adds a bit of power. Interesting that they're using the stock airbox and not the TRD one.

So they added an intake and exhaust? What is the car now, 209 horsepower?

Yes I read the article and am thrilled about an even lighter version, but not the absolutely stupid and unnecessary wing.

How about a newer RUF RGT, that is a car that needs a stupid big wing.

You don't make a whole lot of sense. Here are the cars the 86 beat with the big spoiler that yes, made a difference. Lap times were shortened by that spoiler. That's fact.

That may seem like nothing on paper, but when you start adding in the fact that time beats out times of the Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari 360 CS, Nissan GT-R Spec-V, Corvette ZR1, Lambo Gallardo, Porsche 911 GT2, and so on, you realize that this must be one beastly `Yota GT 86.

Then you are just clueless. The amount of time shaving downforce an airfoil adds to a 2300lb car at 100mph sweeps is absolutely functional and quite useful. 200hp means nothing

Of course, wings do nothing on the track. This isn't a race car or anything.

Aerofoils aren't some super secret magic device that only high horsepower cars use you know. Plenty of functional rear spoilers generate downforce, even at speeds add low as 60 mph.

Toyota GT86 TRD Griffon Project Heading to Goodwood

Quote:
A year after launching its GT86 sports car, Toyota will return to the Goodwood Festival of speed with a race-bred version of its wildly popular coupe.

The car, which initially debuted during the Tokyo Auto Salon, was created by Toyota Racing Development specifically for track driving. Lighter, stiffer and better prepared for high-speed driving, the hood, roof, doors, deck lid and spoiler are all made of carbon fiber. Its bumpers are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic as are the front wings and rear diffuser.

It gathers further weight savings by using polycarbonate plastic instead of glass for the windows as well.

A TRD mechanical limited-slip differential replaces the car’s standard Torsen unit and the final gear ratio is shortened to 4.8:1. TRD also added a coil over suspension kit.

Other changes include upgraded brake pads and an oil cooler for the engine, which remains stock, as well as new 18-inch wheels with Yokohama Advan tires.
