If you have intellect, balls of steel, and TRULY enjoy making things with your hands you should do like I did and become a machinist.

The pay can be good (usually starts around $20/hr maxes out around $38) and your skill level is dependent upon how well you pick things up and your understanding of what you are doing. One of the few careers left that reward you for working. The work itself is very rewarding too (depending on the industry you serve i guess)

That being said, I got lots more enjoyment working in the shop than I do now running it....but I make a VERY good living for a HS dropout that looks like a hippie/leprechaun/terrorist

I am a Human Resource Director

LOVE IT

If you like being the boss without actually being the boss its a good job. Bad part is you have to wear many hats and have to put up with a lot of personal bullsheet.

The pay is good and the ceiling is high.

I work in insurance claims right now but recently had an interview within the company for a IT position for the company website and claims systems. I'm really hoping I get this job because I will not have to deal with customers anymore.

I work for Intel, basically I maintain the equipment we use to make microchips. I work nights, but only 3 or 4 days a week depending on the week. It's 12 hour shifts but we have plenty of break time, over time is built into my schedule, I have health and dental insurance. Oh yeah I get paid enough to have a hobby that includes a $26k car with nearly $30k worth of goodies on it...of course being single helps too.

I had two career type jobs. The first was a LEO in the suburbs of Detroit. After seven years I couldn't wait to get out. I then went into insurance claims. I did not like the work and retired as soon as I could; age 55. All my life I rode motorcycles and dreamed of selling motorcycles. After I retired the first thing I did was get a job selling motorcycles and I absolutely loved it. However, I have to say that I didn't have the pressure on me the others in sales had. I didn't need the job and they did. That made a big difference. The hours were long but having never been exposed to sales jobs before I was amazed at the amount of money a guy could make. If I had it to do all over again that's the direction I would go.

I'm actually quitting my job so I can go and finish my school, last year and it will be my only yeah where I don't have to work. But because I've been working for the last ten years, I'm afraid of not working. Yeah sounds weird....it would be nice if I could get a change in environment, like going out west and work and school...still the hard part is knowing where to start.

I'm all ears if anyone has any advice, and to the OP, I feel like you can go to school anytime in your life as long as you're not stuck with responsibilities (kids, family, debt) but you can only be in the right place at the right time for something you love to do for all your life once.

I'm still looking for it my self

Sales suck

IT sucks as well.

Go for whatever your heart desires, not what other people like.

I wish exploring other places and eating food at different countries was a job.

Ugh.

Actually it probably is, but I want to do it.

Its possible, but having a family with that type of job or any kind of stable relationship is difficult.

A lot needs to be given up to have these "dream" jobs.
