Regarding the original topic; I'm going to wait and see how loud the stock noise floor is in the car before investigating any gear. The factory option Dynaudio branded system in my Golf is actually rather good in terms of frequency response, distortion, and phase coherence. The car is also rather quiet even at freeway speeds. It'll take a relatively quiet noise floor in the 86 for me to bother improving the audio, as I don't want to add 300 pounds in sound damping and thus ruin the handling. I suppose "moar powah" would artificially improve the signal-to-[road] noise ratio, but honestly I don't like listening to music at ear bleeding levels. Also, I'll need to keep the vast majority of the cargo space, so we'll have to see if there are any hidden spaces that can accommodate amps and subs without being moot points.

I have a passion for great sounding systems but I am concerned about weight with this car. I will be working towards making a great sounding front stage with quality components.
At home I have a decent surround sound system (def techs, pioneer elite) but it is more for blurays and big sound than great fidelity.

The stereo will be one of my first mods, as it always is. Im not sure yet if I'll be running my Alpine 9887 or picking up a Bit ten. I'll probably scope the head unit output and see how flat it is. I've already got some morel tweets that I'm gonna try pairing with OEM ID's v1, and an IDQ 12. Making a box to fit within the trunk will probably be the hardest part. I might try glassing it, but probably not... Actually I've been think of an IB setup with a cut out in the middle of the rear seat and some accusticly transparent cloth.

Screw HUs, I'm going with a quality carputer setup in my car once the W8 touchscreens come out. I'm not going to pay twice the price for half the functionality, no thank you.

I have experience with only one car pc, and it hasn't really been a good one. Of course the bloke has limited funds and time to work on it. I would love to see / hear a proper carputer in action. |

That's a nice looking HU, and the feature list is perfect for my goals. If my 9887 gives up the ghost I'll be taking a very careful looks at the 80PRS. The Bit 10 looks decent to, but I'd rather be able to adjust from the HU and not have to worry about the factory HU being the weak link. |

Car audio is simple. Just imagine intsead of a room in a house, you are designing your stereo for a really odd shaped house the size of a small closet. This house is also fairly special in that it's walls love to vibrate at all frequencies, with no real damping of any... oh yeah and you can't touch ~50% of the wall, you have to leave those parts like they are. Oh and it's next to a really busy airport, in a hurricane (yes even in this hurricane the airport is still landing and taking off planes). See simple. |

^ hehe so true. Very good reproduction in the car is a challenge.
This is a nice post guys! I think it shows that we who are into such a sports car are also into the nuances of great sound. Quirky hobbies for quirky owners. I would very much like to offer a SQ specific lightweight subwoofer for this platform. Little 'cheap' cars like these do tend to benefit in the SQ realm with a nice tight sub to play above the noise floor. In the real world a little extra in this department can really help, and I say this as no means a "bass head" Has anyone seen/heard the companys offerings who is going into Scion specific sound upgrades? They are something like Bavarian Sound Works for BMW... Can't recall a name. Would you guys be interested in a nice 10" driver in a molded carbon fiber box? |

I'm not interested in in the woofer, or the ten (I don't want to buy another woofer) but I'll be hunting for a good box. If you can make a box to house my IDQ v3 12, that's about .80 ft^3 I would be very interested.

I use a SQ 8" in my small cars. If I install a system in the BRZ it'll follow that same path probably.
Oh just got by 80PRS today :P haven't unboxed it though.
