It'd be a simple math code, but changing anything in the gearing, wheels, tires, etc would throw the usability of that function out the window. I don't think Toyota would make such a choice, considering the clear intentions of a vast aftermarket for the car. If that's what it is, then yeah, it's a cheating band-aid solution. :P

The ECU uses engine RPM and either a tranny sensor or the same sensor that is used to calculate the speed your moving (dont think it is a wheel sensor).

why dont we get an indicator to tell

1. how far the clutch is depressed
2. how much more clutch is left
3. if there is any wear and tear to the pressure plate
4. leakage of the flux capacitor
5. how many more miles before engine breaks
6. how many more miles before we see an s2000

I dont need to see on an indicator what gear I am on if am driving a manual. its easy to tell just by the feel of that ball at the end of the stick///

Or you could just leave the feature off and ignore this thread, instead you decided to post this very useless post.

I know someone that did the final drive upgrade and it threw off the whole thing so it seems that it is going solely based off of the sensor in the transmission. So there isnt a simple code you can add.

Yeah, think its just based off engine speed vs vehicle speed.
When the clutch switch shows engaged.

The reason for the whole thing, I believe...
...Is for Derp's to see the upshift arrow,
Throw in the next gear = improve MPG.

Basically a upshift indicator for Fuel consumption.

How do you see your gear? I've played with all the buttons. Or so I thought.

Exactly what I feared. That's a shame. I've been driving a stick for about 11 years and the only time I've ever actually wanted/needed to know what gear I was in was when I rolled to a stop and forgot I was in 5th. Otherwise, gear display while moving seems kind of pointless. Disappointed Toyota would do it that way.

It can show R without clutch engagement, so it's gotta be possible.
It depends on how the system makes the distinction. If it's per gear, then maybe, but if it's making the distinction between a forward/backward gear, it will display Reverse as the only backwards gear, but has to wait for additional input to tell you which forward gear you're in.

Believe it or not, there is a switch to detect when you're in reverse. The reversing lights don't come on by magic.

Mine was also not on, but I found out how to from the owners manual. I see you've got a high spec, so it'll be different to my std which doesn't have keyless entry.
Some say - if you're desperate - read the book - LOL!!
Good luck.

And then it brings us back to the question, how can the R indicator be shown on idle when the engine speed and wheel speed is at zero.
