Practice Day at Daytona - 5/4/13

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hUVEKDlwOg"]BRZ at Daytona International Speedway Practice 5-4-13 RTR #11 - YouTube[/ame]

Practice was soaking wet as it has rained for days and continued raining as we ran way ran the first session. Second session ran in the dry so the times weren't comparable.

This was my best run at 46.6xx. It was the third fastest run of the session with a Lotus Kart running a 44.xxx and a National driver with a prepped STX RX-8 besting me by .1 second.

Sunday should be fun as it should be dry (or drier).

I should have totally been there. Haven't tried SCCA yet, just a few days at CFRC. Look forward to hearing how things went today.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eDpqlwO0dY"]BRZ at Daytona International Speedway 5-5-13 RTR #11 - YouTube[/ame]

Unlike Saturday, Sunday was dry and the track was good for racing.

Gary, a local CS Miata, ran RTR on Rivals today. He came FLYING out of the gate with a run much quicker than all other RTR runs. After three runs, I was still down by .011 and got slower on my 4th lap. On my 5th, I pulled out a 50.394 and was able to best Gary.

The car was good, with just a little oversteer issue out there. I lowered tire pressures twice but just couldn't get it to stop. Since Daytona is an abnormal event, I didn't bother adjusting much for it.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRwcG5COml0"]BRZ at Sebring International Raceway Autocross Practice 5-18-13 RTR #11 - YouTube[/ame]

This is only my second time on concrete and my first time (Sebring in January) was awful so I was a little tentative about running out here. However, with my goals of nationals next year, I know I need a lot of concrete practice.

Saturday practice went great. Found the car's sweet spot for tire pressure for concrete. Ran 6 + one rerun. After 4 laps I felt the tires giving up due to heat but somehow, I did my best on the 7th and final lap, though the tires were beyond falling off.

This run was 49.3xx, which was the second fastest raw time of the day for a doorslammer. A DSP 330i on RComps beat me by .1 second (and a Kart decimated us both) in raw.

Still having trouble with that slow turn around sweeper, understeering on exit. Can't tell if it's me going too fast or the car setup.

I have already put over 20k on this car since June 30, 2012 so I finally have purchased a second car. I picked up a 96 Miata M edition to drive 4-5 days of the week to keep the mileage off so Im not over 50k by Nationals next year. Now that Im not doing a few thousand miles a month, I can afford to put better, more expensive fluids in the car to free up a little power. Haven't made my decision on engine oil, transmission fluid and diff fluid.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b4WxBFxbOA"]BRZ at Sebring International Raceway Autocross 5-19-13 RTR #11 - YouTube[/ame]

Sunday had a smallish turnout for an SCCA Solo event in our area, 34 drivers.

After figuring out what the car likes on Saturday, I was set for Sunday. I started off with an okay time (49.173), good enough to win the 5 car RTR Class for the day. From there, I improved on most runs. This video is my 5th out of 6 runs where I ran a 48.155

I found that on a warm day on concrete, both days, my RS3s fell off DURING the fifth run, even though this was my best. Seems like even with just a single driver, I will need to begin bringing water as 4 runs is the max before the temperature goes too high.

Early in the day, when temperatures were a little more forgiving (which makes up for a small bit of the time but not much), Terry Tabor took 3 runs in my car and ran a 47.1xx (a full second better than I did in 5 runs!), which would have been good enough for win in STR. I know the car's setup is good even if not perfect with Terry being able to lay the time down so easily. Now to just improve the drivers some more.

This was my first and fastest run. My subsequent three runs didn't even get close. I had wondered all day if I had gone off and no one caught up but that was not the case. This was good for a 43.18. Good for the RTR win and 5th in PAX if you use the proper index for RTRCS (which Central Florida Region never adopted so we get hit with the C Stock RComp PAX).

Car was dead on, no changes.

This was my first event at Brooksville and the level of grip was surprising. Car reacted much quicker than it does on pavement. Can't wait to go back out there, even though it's a 2 hour drive!

Looks like I skipped an entry from earlier this month. This was from June 9th

First place in RTR with a 45.963

On Saturday, I did an event with Martin Sports Car Club at this location so I knew the surface had some decent grip. We were worried about rain all day, and as usual, I was stuck running the last run group, highest chance of rain.

My luck, during the time between run one and two, it began raining on and off. During my second run, a ~15 second shower occurred (mid-run). It didn't affect my grip at that moment TOO badly. Until the last turn. The front end turned in then hit a damp patch while I was using 100% of the grip. Through me into 3 cones and almost into the curb.

I'll upload this video soon.

This was the fourth and final run. I was in third, down by .5 seconds to a Miata. I cut off .8 to take the lead. Another Miata ran after me and missed my time by .097 so it was a very close finish.

My R-S3s are DONE. At the last event, Sebring, the tires were eaten alive by the concrete. I'm surprised they drove as well as they did.

I do think I have the setup dialed in though as the same settings for Sebring worked out here.

Took first in RTR for the day. Brand new tires so they were getting scrubbed in still.

This run was going pretty well until I got into a bit of understeer halfway through the run, in a spot where I needed to downshift into 2nd. Wrangling the understeer took my attention and I knew if I tried to downshift then, I'd likely throw the rear end sideways. So I rode 3rd gear from ~42mph back up to 60+. Left at least .5 second on the table.

Very fast and fun course. I always love running at FIRM.

Same here. This is my favorite course, look forward to it every time. We have another one on November 17th and if any seasoned autocrossers wants to take a vacation to Florida, my seat is open.
