If they manage to keep the weight gain minimal and the roofline low, I would be interested in a couple of years.

Wow, that's damn cool... I really like the rendering. But I kind of feel like a sports sedan needs to have more power. I'm totes fine with the coupe being 200hp... But I think if they turned it into a sedan it needs to be a 3 series killer.

Personally only need a flat hatchback with a roof imo.
I'd take that over a trunk any and every day.

I thought these plans died. I remember the concepts/renderings from the past.

Hmm, the render leaves more questions than it answers. 3 more inches of leg room and up to 6 more inches of total length would be fantastic. So long as they don't screw up the engine/gearbox it could be fantastic.

Toyota already makes a "3-series" under Lexus brand.

The reason I like seeing S2ks and RX-7s and 240Zs is that they didn't compromise with those cars - they stayed sports cars.
They did make a 2+2 version of the 260Z/280Z/280ZX/Z31/Z32. Some Z enthusiasts *hated* that the 2+2 even existed. For me, I don't see the big deal. I preferred the 2-seat 240Z, so that's what I got, but if there had been a 240Z 2+2, it wouldn't have bothered me at all.
I would have *loved* for Honda to make multiple cars on the S2000 platform. Closed 2-seat coupe would have been my 1st choice, but a 2+2 would have been a GREAT idea as well.

They didn't make a sedan version or a hatchback version or a whatever version - your choice was 2dr coupe or 2dr roadster. Mazda has done just fine keeping the Miata the Miata. I'd like to see the FT86 remain that pure.
I just don't see how denying others a different format of rwd car they might want somehow makes the FT86 2+2 coupe "better"!

I wanna see a whole family: coupe, hatch, 4-door, 5-door, 2-seater. Would have liked to have seen other variants before a convertible, but having the convertible option is fine as well.
There aren't *nearly* enough small/lightweight rwd cars on the market, let's see MORE!

It's not making anything better - it's just leaving it alone. I don't like variants in general. I dislike Civic SI sedans and WRX hatches too.

My main issue is that often when a model offers both a coupe and sedan version, the coupe version suffers. It's basically just a door-delete sedan (see Altima Coupe/Camry Solara/Accord Coupe). By offering a 4dr sedan, eventually the sedan is going to take precedence, as it will sell in higher volumes. Now that the committee has taken over, we'll add more crap, because the average sedan buyer wants more crap.

Voila, Toyota 3-series. Note that I'm not referring to "3 series" as a lux sedan, I'm referring to it as a family of everything including a coupe, sedan, wagon, CUV, etc.

I'm fine with the roadster, the shooting brake idea's neat (though I doubt it'd sell), but no sedan, please.

^ I am on the same boat with ZDan. Why limits the potential of FT-86 to be a coupe? When they announced the concept, Toyota already said this new concept is going to be a platform of cars, not just one car and its convertible variant. I would guess that based on the continuing success of existing FT-86 variants Toyota will introduce new variants with this platform. As Tada san kind of hinted how he thought of the Mini's family of cars done by BMW, there could be a trend to keep FT-86 fresh and broaden the acceptance to general public.

So now we have coupe, and convertible is on the horizon. What's next? 3 door fastback or 4 door sedan? Then 3/5 doors hatchback or 2 seater targar? The possibility is endless!

I'd like this idea far more if they just took the GT-86 chassis and then built a completely-different looking sedan on it without making any connection to the GT-86 name.

That wouldn't bother me at all. Call it the Toyota Bob or something.

Toyota wants to expand their sporty offerings which currently stands at 1 model, the only way to do that is to make additional sporty cars and a sedan inspired 86 is a natural progression if you ask me. Buh by Civic Si sales.

The hatch is so much better looking than the sedan and far more useful! With a lower polar moment of inertia as well!

I don't like the look of hatchbacks - they look overly bulbous and "tall" to me. It's a personal taste issue, I'll admit.

This is the first non-hatch I've owned. Civic's, CRX, MCS, 240, xD. I'd be really interested in a hatch version, but wonder about balance with that much more weight over the rear.

Love both of 'em, would be my preferred version of either!

I can appreciate this concern. Ideally, the 4-door version would be on a longer-wheelbase platform.
I too am usually no fan at all of 2-door "coupe" versions of fwd sedans. Most often there is zero weight or stiffness benefit, and they are frequently awkward-looking.

But in FR cars, it often works out fine: 510 2- and 4-doors, both = awesome!

Nah, should remain a lot smaller/lighter than the 3-series.

I'm not so worried. It's not like the existing car isn't already compromised, anyway. 55/45 weight distribution is nothing to brag about for an FR coupe... Presumably they'd move the battery to the back or something for a sedan version to keep the balance from getting worse.
