That is weird. I have no idea what is going on, but if the headlights and ebrake are off (and the car is running), the LED strip should be on regardless of gear.

Yes, they turn OFF when the headlights are on. But considering how bright the LEDs are at night, you do not want them on. Otherwise you're just being a **** to the person in front of you. That's why you never see LEDs on with headlights for cars like Audi as well. You're LEDs work as intended. There's nothing wrong with them.
!! .. thats a good explaination and just now realize the Audi example...
-was it really that bright??
- what about mercedes with theirs headlights AND LED both on?
-the new honda Accord, Lexus Gs, IS
they all ON with headlights ON

Those have 2 modes. They dim when headlights come on with all those vehicles. Brz just has one mode, day time. Apperently there is suppose to be a recall on those DRLs soon by Subaru but who knows
