Autoweek's review of the new Forester reported that the 2.0 liter turbo will appear in the BRZ, but Autoblog's review of the new Forester says the opposite, with the explanation that it won't fit. Who knows? One Subaru salesman told me an upgraded BRZ will arrive in 2015. He heard this from a company representative at a large Subaru function, which of course doesn't make it so, but it seemed credible to me.

Official party line is that BRZ/FRS won't get a turbo, anyone who says otherwise is rumor mongering and trying to rack up hits on their blog. Trying to guess the next move of multi national corporations is fun I suppose but at this point enjoy what you've got and pine for what you want.
The motor will get a turbo, it will be production, and it will be in Subaru's other products but that's pretty much all we know. |

Honestly even if they do come out with a turbo version it is likely to be 4k+ more expensive which puts it in a different appeal bracket. I don't think I could have justified spending 30K+ on my FRS so wouldn't be too jealous.

For this car I'd take .2l or .4l extra displacement over factory turbo any day.

I have been reading on and on about a turbo engine about this car. Honestly, Lets get to the nitty gritty here and bottom line. The CEO even said when the car was designed, it was not meant to have a turbo, he wanted to keep the car simple and well balanced. That being said, if you wanted a turbo car, you should went and bought a turbo car not the FR-S or BRZ. I used to own a turbo supra, yes making more power is addicting. But when I bought an S2000 I finally understood what balance and power was. I also understood what spirited driving meant. Then finally I said to myself, there is nothing wrong with Natural Aspiration in a motor. I was sold on the idea that, if the engine rev's high and makes good power per liter, then it was a strong motor! My all time favorite naturally aspirated motor is the F20C. Considering I am a die hard fan of the 1JZ or 2JZ engine community. The FA20 under our hoods, makes enough power to be spirited. Does it make comparable power to the F20C, not really. If you know what I know about the F20C then you know it has 9000 RPM redline and makes 245hp at the crank w/about 162ft/lb of torque. This all coming from a 2.0L motor as well. I believe though, there is way more potential in our motor, it just needs to be tapped into. Perhaps if the redline was higher and the engine management was adjusted properly, the FA20 could make the same power that the F20C does. You will see, once you have discovered how to tap into the motor, that you will not need a turbo. If you want to get one, then fine, thats on you. Thats what you love to do. As for myself, Im starting off with basics like lightening the car some more and handling. I will be looking to open more power on the motor later though. Enjoy the car as is I say. I think once you have driven an S2000 your eyes open up to see something different about engines. Ever since I did, I respected and understood a strong Natural Aspirated motor. I appreciate both disciplines. Therefore I truly enjoy my FR-S in its current form, unmolested and pure.. DRIVING IS BACK!

Very well said. That is the reason I would take GT3/GT3 RS any day over 911 turbo. |

It's already February and Toyota has been awfully silent about the limited production homologation TRD supercharger. I know PWC states that if they're going to run a supercharger it needs to be based on a production unit. One would think Toyota would've anounced something like that at Geneva (the last major auto show before the start of the PWC season). The only thing GT-86 related being anounced for Geneva is the convertible.

As someone running a turbo on the FRS, I have to say that the likelihood of Subaru or Toyota going balls out with a 250+ HP engine in this car is pretty far fetched. Im running just 7 psi at the moment which equates to 255hp and 207 ftlbs of torque. I have a fully upgraded suspension, wider wheels and tires, clutch, and a myriad of other upgrades. Tail happy doesnt even begin to describe this car now, I know my suspension still needs some tweaking but just stepping into the throttle in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd causes wheel spin in a straight line, its fun but for the majority of people this will likely end up in much more wrecked cars. The rear end of these cars is super light so its harder to get the rear wheels to hook up.
If Subaru releases a hotter engine, a lot more engineering will have to go into the car to make it streetable. It will likely cost way more money, think WRX STi range and will be less compliant on the road than the stock car. I love my car with the turbo, and will be pushing towards 500whp soon, but it is quite a handful on the street. I still have to get my suspension tuned by a pro and will probably go with stickier tires but theres only so much you can do to get a car this light to maintain traction with more hp. |

Even if they have a turbo model ready they will deny, deny, deny until the last possible moment. There's no way they will confirm something that has the potential to take away from current sales.

The FT-86/GT-86/FR-S/BRZ are truly beautiful machines. Simple and pure! I love the sound my engine makes from the exhaust when I wind her up, and reving to 7k, (wished it reved higher) its just awesome! It might need a little more fine tuning in the balance department, but im sure we can get all that with the aftermarket support we have. If you read the track run agains the V-6 mustang, then you would know it was only a second behind it. The mustang weighs over 500lbs more than the FR-S too. If the FR-S had about 30-50 ft/lb more torque, it would easily crush it. Also it wasnt armed with stickier tires.. that is the chief complaint about both models. The tires are not ample enough and do not exploit the cars true strength! Every time I see a muscle car, I just say thats great, you can go fast in a straight line.. now let me get you on some curves and lets see you smile then? lmao! I am more of a fan of cars that handle, not straight in-line power.. that does nothing for me. When I think of my car, I think of it comparable to say, maybe an F-16, or F-5 Tiger of yesteryear. Its like the light weight champ of the fighter jet world. Its nimble, agile and fast enough to get your pulse running. The boxer motor just boasts to its performance and was wonderful idea that was executed well. Maybe in a couple more years you will see the FA20 get some advanced internal upgrade and untap its powerband. Who knows. But for know, I'm content with my FR-S just the way it is!
