You running an auto? Also, I've only got 700 miles on mine, still breaking in and on my second fill up. Been driving it like a grandma keeping it under 4k.

Nice! I hope my gas mileage reaches that point, that or when I get my tune done once I get my intake, headers, and exhaust on.

I'm running completely stock, I just go slow from a start, like really slow and will gradually build up my speed. I suppose that's why I get decent gas mileage compared to some of my friends.

More like 30k in my car since its track only! I really dont believe in break in periods. My old ram hemi had 150k miles when i sold her and i did not do a break in period i towed my 350z to the track the first day i bought her!

OP, I agree with you. For my car, I kept it under 4k rpm for the first 700 miles. After that, I went:

700-800 miles: 5k rpm
800-900 miles: 6k rpm
900-1000 miles: 7k rpm
1000 miles: 7.4k rpm

I also engine braked starting at those rpms to try to seat the rings better. Not saying it's the best way, just the way I did it.

At 14 miles, let it warm up. Took it on an open road and slowly worked up the engine speed in 3rd gear all the way to redline and let it slowly drop down. Wash rinse and repeat. All over the rev range varying loads. for the first 500 miles then dumped the oil.

I never understood why you need to break in a motor for 1000 miles by keeping RPM down? Maybe they go under the assumption people are not going to change that oil for 5000-7000 miles?

Over at subaruforester.org, there's has been an ongoing oil consumption thread at the top of FB engine forum since June of 2011 and it's not even a sticky. People are joining the site just to complain about it.

One of my theories is that the cars are being broken in too easily since I would say the majority of folks do it strictly by the book.

Same here. Just waited for the redline stuff till I had 100 miles on the car.

My dealer didn't tell me shite. I drove the car right off the lot on a Saturday, picked up my daughter (220 KM drive), went to a wet parking lot and proceeded to do donuts and drifts.

Will the car explode on me? No. I probably wouldnt have done that if the dealer had informed me first but no biggie. I believe break in procedure is partially designed to prevent any defect issue from being amplified due to the engine running faster. In other words, to minimize damage caused from the percentage of expected component failures on a new vehicle. It is just statistics.

Also, refraining from really heating up the engine when new might prevent that burning smell that is so common when coatings, oils, waxes in the engine bay from the manufacturing are exposed to heat and burn off quicker than intended.
