unfortunately stage 5 will be the last stage, but would be awesome if they do a quick epilogue in the future showing takumi with the new gt86(i believe initial d is set in the 90's)

I really love the 86 in yellow. It would have been a hard choice for me had it been a factory color.

About the only other car I would have purchased in yellow is the current Camaro (because Transformer).

Well the first stage seems to be based in the mid 90s. I think the oldest car I saw was the R32 which ended in 93/94? Takumi was 18 at the time.

Now hes older. Maybe 25ish? Newest car in stage 5 right now was the Evo 7. Which came out in 2001-2003. So the anime does a big spread from stage 1 to 5 now.

5th stage picks up the year after he graduates high school. He's only 19. The time lapse between stages' release doesn't translate to the time occurring in the series. If I'm not mistaken, Stages 1-4 all take place his last year in high school.

its true about the newer cars, but i dont think that much time has passed. im pretty sure they reference events from the 1st stage as being only like 2 years ago. so maybe it was late 90's early 00's but everyone drove old cars?

or more likely just a slight oversight by shuichi shigeno, since he took so much time in between stage 4 and 5. too many bad ass cars to choose from, to limit yourself to a couple years worth. besides he never actually mentions the year in the manga so its cool

Yeah actual time lapse is never refered to. Its just a theory I had.

Well there was a slight oversight in that the first episode Keisuke mentions that the AE86 is a "10-yr-old" car, if I recall correctly. Given that the AE86 is a zenki, it would put them in 1994, roughly.
