You know, there are a lot of us in the first two brackets of geezer-dom that got to enjoy the early days of the sport-compact/import revolution. I owned two first gen Preludes (79' and 81'), Two first gen MR-2's (an 85 NA and an 88 SC), an 85 VW Golf, a 91 Civic SI (which is quite possibly the best damn car I've ever owned), and a 92 Miata. Lot of great import rides in the 80's and 90's that were owned by guys like me who were in their teens and twenties (I graduated HS in 86', same year as Martin Blank
). Since becoming an "adult" (ahem), I've had the pleasure of a 99' Miata, a 2001 Subaru 2.5RS (smooooth as silk that 2.5L flat four), a 2001 S-2000 (I really don't miss it as much as you'd think I would, had some very un-Honda-like issues), a 2006 Winning blue MX-5 (now THAT one I miss), and a 2008 Civic SI Sedan (Hello parenthood!, possibly the second best damn car I've owned). As an early adopter of the FR-S, I'm overall quite happy with it. It's nice to be back in a RWD platform, especially one that is so economical (~$25K) and can carry me, the wife, and our five year old daughter. This car really DID come along at the right time, and will more than suffice as my "midlife crisis" car .Mike |

My first car ever I was only thirteen, 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air 210 post, I begged my PoPs to lend me the money. And I knew I could rebuild her. I saw a car in Hot Rod 1978, I got a job bussing tables. Two year later she was finished Hi-Boy style with a 327ci with a Weiand tunnel ram.

Officially in the 1st age bracket, but in 2 months ... I graduate to the 2nd bracket. Learned to drive in my frind's VW bug with a manuel ... in Alaska .... in the snow. From there ..... maxda B2000 p/u, AMC spirit, toyota 4X4, celica, another toy 4X4 lifted with big tires, ford taurus, dodge Intrepid (lved that car), dodge ram 4X4. Then the fun started: F350 8 inches of lift, weld wheels. H2 hummer. 996 turbo, 997 convertible, 997 turbo ...... recession: Prius ....NOW: FR-S.
Cool thing about being older is that you have a chance to drive alot of cool vehicles. |

Wow, people here have had a lot of cool cars. I'm in early years of the second category. After a Triumph Spitfire back in the 60s I haven't had a proper sports car until now. At least all my rides had manual transmissions, even my previous driver--a 1988 Camry bought new. I did my share of "sliding" on California dirt roads, and now here in the Midwest snow.
As a kid my dad took my sister and me to the Santa Barbara, CA, road races where we saw the likes of Ken Miles, Walt Hangsten in the Birdcage Maserati, and Dan Blocker (yeah, that Dan Blocker). My favorite was always Scooter Patrick in his Porsche 904 because it was the underdog against Cobras and Corvettes and its superior handling ability kept it competitive. Seems to me my week-old FR-S (MT) is in the same tradition. I don't plan on trying any slides on public roads but still manage to have a blast here in the Midwest on the occasional roundabout, s-turn, and freeway offramp. Already it feels like an old friend--I have a pretty good idea of what it's going to do and it seems to know what I want to do. Buying this car. I knew there would be idiots along the way who, because it's marketed as a Scion, believe the hype that it's just for 20-year-olds. They fall in that category of people who just don't get it. As long as my reflexes are reasonably good I see no reason to stop having fun. |

Some of the most sensible comments I've read. Love hearing about the old cars too. The question, what was your first car? Produces better answers in this forum. Man, can't wait to be old...but for now I'll just listen to rock and roll

Old man Grinch is in the 1st bracket. As far as rides, they have come and gone in this order
1980 Honda Prelude -manual 1989 Acura Integra - manual Forgetting all the exact year models, but after marriage and working towards 4 kids, the cars start to become more practical and boring... Ford Taurus - auto Mazda Protege - auto Mazda Millenia S - auto (loved that smooth ride) Mitsubishi Montero - auto (design with that floating compass built into the dash) Chevy Surburan - auto Nissan Xterra - auto GMC Denali short bed version - auto Toyota Camry - auto Finally back to my youth...back to manual...full fledged mid life crisis.. 2013 Dark Grey Metallic Limited BRZ - manual As you can see it has been quite some time since my last manual and I'm never going back to Auto!

Just here to enjoy the stories and proper grammar.
![]() Sounds like a few of you needed to sell the wife on manuals though. I taught my fiancé and she loved it so much she just bought an '05 BMW 330i ZHP sedan in manual for herself. Odd situation though when your wife's car has more power and grip than yours!
