Not sure how a car that is $60K+ is the benchmark for a car that costs half that much, or how they are in the same "segment".

Oh...one other comment...note that I am not getting a BRZ next, I am getting a Cayman GTS. So, if I believe the BRZ is the better car, why am I getting another Cayman? Well, the experience is different. I want to get the best handling, everyday car I can afford and for me that's the GTS 4.0, but I know I would have more fun in the BRZ...and that's why I think I will return to the BRZ one day.
Thanks for all your input...it's an interesting subject for me and shows that things are not just black and white.

It occupies the same "segment" (sports cars) but within that segment there is further segmentation which means the segment within the segment the BRZ/86 occupies is not the same segment within the segment the porsche occupies. |

For that matter, even hypercar is just a subset of "sports car" because its a "sports car with a stupidly high price" as opposed to the 86 which is a "sports car with a reasonable price tag"

I disagree with this. And I owned a Boxster S. And Porsche is my favorite brand.

Not a pile of people cross shop the two cars much less own both. My daughter in laws brother sells Porsches and I cross shopped a couple of models that were smoking deals due to "family". I went went for several test drives and was back and forth on the fence totally unable to decide which one I liked better. Then I went with a FRS on first sight and test drive. Within the first 5 minutes I knew it was the better car for ME.

Quoting Tetsuya Tada We can testify to how good a job these chaps have done, especially considering the lofty aim they were shooting at. “Dynamically,” says Tada-san, “we were aiming - always - for the Porsche Cayman.” Clearly, Cayman was the benchmark during GT-86 design and they are in the same segment. At least, Tetsuya Tada thinks so. And, Cayman is the better car. You guys keep discussing your thing. Don't let me bother you. |
