OP, I was going to get MPS4S, but I bought a 4th car, so my FR-S budget has changed. I will be trying a set of Indy 500's. Because: They have good reviews and are approx 1/2 the cost.

I second the Hankook evo 2s. I had them and I think I got about 40K miles out of them. Tons of grip, but that fades with time as with all tires.
Running the conti extreme contact sport now cause I got a deal on them. Grip is not quite as good as Hankooks. Will see how they wear. If I don't get 40K miles at least I will go back to hankooks evo 2s. |

Hated them and couldn't wait for them to wear out. Did nothing particularly well except last longer than I wanted them to...really disappointing in the rain. I'm on my second set of Conti ExtremeContacts (first were DW, then V12 Evos, current ones are EC Sports), and think they're fantastic.

I prefer the ECS over the Evo so far too, though I haven't worn out the Evo so I can't comment on mileage yet.

I had the Hankook V12's on my Saab 9-3 before and they didn't suit front-heavy FWD cars because of the really soft sidewalls. They were comfortable and quiet though.
I always thought that tire would fare better on lightweight RWD cars but I wanted more grip for spirited driving. I would go Indy500 or S04 Pole Position for the more affordable price range, then if you have a larger budget then ExtremeContact Sport or Pilot Super Sports (if you can still find them). |

I'd rate the Evos along side Sumitomo HTR Z3, which I had before my first set of EC DW.

I just replaced a set of Sumitomo HTRZ-3 tires with the Conti ECS. The improvement was huge. The wet and dry grip of the conti's is far far superior. I am very happy with them and think you may have a hard time finding anything much better in a street tire.

Think I'm going to go with something in the UHP Summer tire category. Is there any way to find out sidewall stiffness? I don't want to end up with something that feels squishy on the road.

Are you on stock suspension? In comparing the V12 to the Contiextreme contact sport, the V12 is a better tire in many ways. More grip and the wet handling was amazing for me.
IMO, the only downside of the V12 is the soft sidewall. Contis have a stiffer sidewall but no way is grip as good. |
