I test drove an FRS at the Scion dealer, as well as one at Carmax. Both times were on boring surface streets, and the salespeople with me didn't want me to rev the car above 4000rpm. I was incredibly unimpressed.
Then much later I was in Japan and decided to rent an 86 from Toyota-rent-a-car.

I spent two days taking it all the best places in the Tokyo and Kanto Regions. I did Hakone turnpike, went to Daikoku Futo PA, drove the Wangan, drove up to Gunma and drove the famous Mt. Haruna and Mt. Usai. That two days with a JDM 86 made me fall in love with the car, and I actually felt like I was saying farewell to an old friend when I dropped it off at the rental office.

Within a few months I had my own BRZ tS.
I guess what I'm saying is that the 86 twins won't really impress until you get to know them on their home turf. If there's any way you can find one to rent for a day, like through TURO or something, you need to just spend a day with it on some twisty roads and see if you connect.

Another suggestion to not limit yourself to just test driving new ones at dealership. From what I can see, there are only about less than 15 in the state of Michigan and half of them are in-transit cars.

Also, 2018 model years can't be ordered starting Friday. Subaru only made around 3,500 of them since that's where the VINs stop in Subaru's VIN database.

Here in south florida the issue was that there is only 1 tiny dealer in the city. as of 2 weeks ago. They had 2 2018s. there are two other dealers about 45 mins drive north. both had a new 2017, I was at one of the dealers north of here where i bought their 2017 last week and I was roaming the lot and they had several 2018 on the lot, maybe 4? none 2019 that I could find. there were in a lot where cars still had the plastics all over. I'm sure they had 3 or 4 in their main lot that they show the customers.
Didn't even tried the several Toyota dealers around. because I knew price would be a lot more. a coworker bought a plain tacoma recently and none would drop the price.

If you whine this much over a quick hour's drive, this is not the car for you. The car has a lot of quirks that will constantly test your feeble patience. Buy a Camry instead.

They produced more FRS/86 then BRZ's in the last 6 years, so there are more FRS/86 out there used/new , then there are BRZ's used/new. Test drive a used FRS/ 86.

I found my BRZ at a Nissan dealership, test drove one at CarMax to be certain this was the car wanted to persue. If you can find a CarMax close enough they can ship the vehicle to the nearest CarMax to you for a test drive (farther out and they'll charge you). I would recommend CarMax to test drive it but be warned none of their agents know anything about the car (in my experience), and they tend me to be over priced.

I dunno. That half hour drive to CarMax might be more than he can handle. I mean, that's like, all day.

Actually nearest CarMax is 2 and a half hours away. So yes it would be all day.

I don't understand. I drove 3 hours one way to look at a car. That's too far to go? Or, is this car not worth the drive.

Honest question, I would only do it for something I really wanted to have a look at.

Oh no! Your life would be over! That's like, a thousand miles or something! You would have to pack a clean change of panties.

Honestly, if you don't want to make the drive, I don't blame you. If you are just looking for a car, I'm sure you can find one closer.

For reference though, I spent 8 months of searching to find the BRZ I wanted, with the options, low miles, and the color I wanted, and I consider my self lucky to find it as quickly as I did. I then proceeded to spend 6 hours at the dealership after the test drive to get it all at the price I wanted.

My point is this, finding the car that you really want is it going to be hard work. Put in the effort now and it will pay off in the end.

Well the original intent of the post was to question how toyota and subaru expect to sell any of these cars if there not available to test drive especially in a market the size of Detroit but extraskanky turned it into being about how far I will or will not drive. I said in one of my earlier posts that I would drive to Ann Arbor, the closest dealership that has one, if I can find the time and I was all set to fly to Miami earlier this year to buy one of the last remaining new blue Genesis Coupes remaining until the deal fell through, so distance is not the issue.

As to your question is the car not worth it the answer is IDK. It would be nice if I could go to one of the near by Toyota or Subaru dealerships and find out. I am in the early stages of buying a new coupe and i can test drive Mustangs, Challengers, Camaros, RC350s, Corvettes and z370s on my lunch hour and not have to make a day of it. I like the looks of the BRZ/86 but if I can't find the time to test drive one so be it.

How is it you can even drive a BRZ because based on your posts you come accross as a punk 12 year old. Welcome to the forum to you to.
