Anything DOT or SNELL certified will protect your head well.
Pricey helmets are much better quality in terms of features, venting, comfortable materials, functions, etc... Motorcycle helmet will be fine BTW |

Yes, but if you have any thoughts about doing HPDEs I'd suggest a SA helmet instead. Go with a M2010 or SA2010 at least, don't bother with a helmet with very limited lifespan left (most don't allow 2000 anymore and, if Snell is ontime for once, 2005's likely won't be accepted past mid to late 2015.
Whatever you do, either make sure the shop you buy from has a hassle free (and free besides return shipping at worst) return policy OR better yet, buy it in person. Helmet fitment is a very individual thing so I always suggest trying on as many as you can find before buying!

I use an Open face for autocrossing and a full faced helmet with the shield down for track events.
here's why. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j5ykoo5j48&feature=player_embedded"]Windshield Damage - TWS Spec Miata - YouTube[/ame] Bell's old ad what got a $10 head, then buy a $10 helmet. I use these http://www.theracersstore.com/index....products_id=63 http://www.theracersstore.com/index....&products_id=2 good luck with your purchase Steve |

^^^^Much agreed
Full face is the only way to go if you'll ever end up at track speeds. It's best to have both covered. I went open face on my first helmet (RallyX), and wound up replacing it within a year. Didn't save me anything. |

I've decided to put off this purchase until I can buy the right helmet. As several people have said, no sense in buying a cheap one if I end up buying a second one.
Per Tainen's suggestion, I'll be hitting up 425 Motorsports. They are right down the road from my work, so that makes it really easy. In the mean time I'll use the rental helmets. Thank you all for your help! |

I hereby raise this thread from the dead, it's SA2015 time!
Help me buy a helmet, up to $500.00 My biggest problem is not wanting to do like last time and order based on measuring my head. I hate the fit of my helmet even though everyone tells me it is perfect. It gives me a headache on track days and feels like it's crushing my head. I have the Pyrotect open face, so it's time for an upgrade anyways to get full face protection. I'll keep the Pyrotect one for some Autocross days in the high summer. I'm not in an area where I can easily go try on helmets; some advice on getting a well fitting helmet would be awesome. It appears that SafeRacer sells Pyrotect as RaceQuip? I'm upping my budget in hopes of comfort and maybe lightness; mostly comfort. Will I simply have a better experience with a better helmet? Brand suggestions? |

Check out thehelmetman.com. Some pretty good deals on SA2010 helmets. I got a carbon Pyrotect for under $500.
