In 8 years, we put 88,000 miles on our Miata (mostly all touring miles).

Well...hopefully. The dealer hasn't heard back from Toyota yet. Assnt. Service Manager tried to tell me they wouldn't submit the warranty claim because of excessive wear on the clutch indicating abuse. I told him I've taken care of the car and haven't abused it at all. The next day he said they would submit the warranty claim.

I'm thinking surely Toyota knows this is an issue with the early engines, so they'll honor the warranty.

Play the marguson act, clutch is a wear item they can skip that. But warranty its still vigent, stick with that

Same here and with 39000 miles and approx. 25000 of it FI, no issues so far...

So lucky if OP is still in the powertrain warranty term.

I don't think the flywheel can prove abuse, but maybe Techsteam could.

They probably think there was a power shift but in the end I'd bet OP will get some concession from Toyota.

Should be in the powertrain warranty term *fingers crossed*. Car was delivered 12/30/2013 with 18 miles. There's no indication the car was in service prior to the delivery date.

When they brought up the clutch after taking the engine out I told them "if the clutch needs to be replaced as a wear item I can pay for that, but the engine failure should be warrantied."

I find it comical that they blame you for a bad rocker design. They made revisions to the rockers, pivots and valves for a reason. You aren't the first to have rocker failure. I'm rebuilding my 2013 due to a spun bearing. I plan to sell this thing ASAP and never buy a Subaru powered car again. WAY too many failures being reported on cars with very low milage. I'm used to driving my cars to 250k before moving on. It's a shame because the car is a blast to drive and there is really no other car (with 4 seats) in production that even comes close to the fun factor per dollar of the 86.

Power shift would have literally no impact at all on rockers. If the engine is turning then the rockers are moving. Over reving is about the only abuse that would impact the rockers and as the OP said, he has an auto so over reving isn't even possible. Toyota is totally pulling one over on him.

Just looked up power shifting and I was mistaken. I thought it was when one accidentally flips into a lower gear when intending to go into a higher one. Obviously that results in an over rev condition if the engine exceeds redline.
