Funny enough I was thinking of an auto BRZ FRS but would prefer 4 doors and a half decent trunk when I need it. I told my GF it makes a lot of sense because I got a ton of spare parts for it lold

I don't have the ability and knowledge to swap an engine for 1200 in a junkyard chasis right now. Would be fun and I would even spend for the tools but my living situation just doesn't allow it. Really I would love that, build an engine and trans off the car and put it in. Rest of the car is really gravy work. Which is why I am trying to be responsible and save money so I don't have to live here longer than I have to.

Budget is not necessarily a problem. It's just I don't want to waste money. But then it seems to get what I want I will need to spend more money. And then the newer cars have all these systems you can't disable.

Frustrating to me. I guess 30k would be the upper limit for me at this time but I REALLY don't want to spend that money. I've looked from new Forester XT, WRX to used Nissan Versa.

I'm having a hard time balancing throwing money out the window and finding a car I can live with. I bought my BRZ new and while I wouldn't say I regret it, financially it was not a good decision. I paid it off in 2 years and spent on track time and mods which is why I love it and don't regret it but not smart financially. And for a DD I would regret throwing money away in depreciation.
Well Zi you are sending a mixed message here. If you want something as a DD that has already depreciated then why is the fact you can't turn the nannies off even an issue? Driving around town in any appliance based hatch or sedan shouldn't have nannies kicking in anyway. I would say the iM/Corrola/ Yaris would fit your needs pretty well. Forget the things you want for a performance car since they simply should not apply.

As Why said don't get to hooked on mileage. A well maintained and lightly driven car with 100K on it will be better than a beat on and abused one with 30K. The types of cars that you are looking at are not usually know to get beat on so higher mileage is OK if the price is right.

I can't just park up and wait when it snows in the winter. And I like to have fun in it. You can't in modern cars. My friend even has a Ram 2500 and you can't turn off the nannies. I don't need horsepower but I also don't want nannies. I was looking at the honda accord forum of newer cars and they have a fault in one system it triggers like 10 faults. CRAZY

I guess I would say in a certain way the principle of the matter is motivating me as well. Just because I don't NEED to turn them off I should be able to. The same way even though I don't necessarily have anything to hide I still want my privacy.

You are describing an ap1 S2000, except for the 3-5 years old part....

Well then you will have to extend your search to older models. Unfortunately the governments from the world are more concerned with keeping the majority of the drivers alive then satisfying a few enthusiasts so expect to see even tighter nannies mandated in the near future. Standing on principal is a wonderful thing but it almost always eliminates options.

The 3-5 year thing is what makes this difficult. Your options open quite a bit if you can let that go.

Honda CRZ? You can turn the traction control off. 6 speed and awesome on gas.
Honda EP3 hatch. K20, great on gas, good on space
Mazdaspeed 3? Not a fan but figured I should add something that isn't a Honda so i don't seem like such a fan boy.

I was looking seriously at a used Honda Element before I got the FR-S.
Practical AF and you can hose out the interior if you get mud and salt.

or a post '15 mustang for the independent rear suspension.

Elements are cool! I would love one with the e-camper top and this interior...

3-5 year is not set in stone it is just as the cars get older the history gets sketchier and since I can't just pull engines or transmissions and rebuild them right now it's a problem. I would love that though in the future.

I hadn't thought of the element. Do they use the J35? I know the honda v6 auto trans had issues. From what I have seen and personal experience the 4cyl autos hold up great with a little maintenance, 6 trans not so much even with regular fluid changes and trans coolers.

They are all the 4, some AT and some MT. Also, some are 2wd and some are AWD depending on year and trim level

Interesting. With the 4 it is probably built on the Accord platform so could be half decent.

I always remember the Element because I worked in a supermarket parking lot and some guy in an element gave me $10. haha

I really wanted a sprinter van for awhile... But, an element is much cheaper to maintain. So was seriously looking at them. The element is a great compromise for space, mpg, and the size of interior compared to exterior.

"The Honda Element is a compact crossover manufactured and marketed by Honda and based on a modified CR-V platform." Quoted from wiki...

They have the, IMO, sucky 4speed auto till 07, then the better auto 5speed. IF that matters at all...

Actually either a Mazda 3 or a pre 2012 Lancer would be a great choice.
