I'm a marginal cook. Am I a poseur because I occasionally opt to go to a nice restaurant?

As long as I don't buy the album and tell people I recorded it. Or go to the steak house and claim to be the chef, it's reasonable. The same should be true for us. Many out there appreciate a good car with specific mods but don't have the time or ability to build it ourselves.

So, if the mods are done well, you can trust the builder, and they match what you were wanting - why not? If someone is going to be a douche canoe and sincerely hassle you because you didn't bust your own knuckles, then they've indicated their opinion isn't useful.

I don't know why we can't all support each other.

...except for coal-rolling, bro-dozer drivers. Eff those guys.
Entertaining post ... but your analogy is not right.

The cook and musician both are professionals that perform their jobs better than an average person. That's why we pay them.

Two modded cars by an ordinary enthusiast and by a professional are completely different. And we are not talking about a Saleen here.

I would never buy such a heavily modified car from a random person. All the edges of those trimmed body parts can easily start rusting in a year, for example, if not done right.

If I cannot afford going to a clean/good restaurant, I eat whatever I can cook.

It really depends on where you get most of your enjoyment.

Some people get all their enjoyment from working on the cars, then get bored with the finished product and either start over or move on to something else. We have had some serial modders on here. They come and go.

Some people enjoy building and driving. They build, they drive to see what they have accomplished, they take it back to the garage for further improvements, they drive again. They don't give up a project just to have something else, but they might take on a new project if it looks like it'll be fun to mod and drive.

Some people don't really enjoy working on cars at all but do enjoy driving them. They buy what they want and/or pay someone to do the work for them.

Which one is best? Who fucking cares. Be whichever one will make you happy.

If you find a car that already has the mods you want, but you're a modder who really wants to do it yourself, pass.

If you're a driver with no real interest in the work, only the outcome, and it fits what you want, buy it.

These are the questions you need to be asking yourself, not us.

It depends the person. Some will buy a heavily modified car no matter what, with the hope to buy it much cheaper than the sum of the parts. These are the opportunists. Others will not buy from an amateur person, but they will buy from a professional even if the parts are exactly the same. It is just that they cannot stand the personalization of the other. These are the selfish. Personally I would prefer to modify it myself. I like the idea of getting there step by step and gain knowledge. Would I ever sell it afterwards? Never and if I had to sell it, then I would know how to handle the above categories of people :b

People be funny. I do some classic car restorations on the side to help finance finance my car hobby.

I have a very nice MGB GT that I have been wanting to sell for a few years. 9K and its ready to drive home. Nobody wants it.

And yet, the same person who does not want to buy my GT for 9k will drop 30k to restore "His" rust bucket MGB GT.

My message to the OP would be "If you were going to go down the same road, then you might as well take advantage of the shortcut". Forget the money, the time savings alone can make it a good deal cause this car customizing stuff eats tons of time.

The challenge is to make sure that the work was not a hack job. If you don't know how to make that assessment, then go find someone that can. The wide-body FRS conversions that I have seen are hacked up bad enough in the quarter panel and front fender areas that an insurance claim to put back that much damage would total the car. I am not qualified to tell what it does to the structure.

Before you buy a modified car, make sure that your insurance company is good with the mods. Ask what happens if it gets in a fender bender where the wide-body needs to be addressed?

Destroyed front fender and bumper cover

Destroyed rear quarter and inner wheel-tub. and rear bumper cover.

Even if somebody has the time and money do they have the space and equipment? Sure you can chop up a car in your driveway but the results will look like a car that was chopped up in a driveway!

I have been toying with the idea of a fun weekend classic cruiser for a while but every time I think I have decided I back off because I simply have no place to store or work on one.
