Do you think Magnaflow is one of them? And, do you think it will be same sound with a boosted (otherwise stock) engine?

As much as I want to have a light, rustproof catback, I just don't want to spend >$1000 for a catback and also face a surprisingly loud catback after installation.

Slightly off topic, but the borla axel back I think sounds/looks pretty good.
very similar to stock but slightly deeper, and chrome tips.

It's lowered on bc coils, running 18" with 265s front and rear, "fat bitches" so I've noticed while driving in 3rd and 4th, around 3k rpm there's a hum not at 2900 or 3100 but right there at 3, I've got stock exhaust and intake, I'm just wondering if it's a normal thing with the flat 4 or if it's maybe something else. I know very little about this car, but from what I can tell it has been taken very well of. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
I also get a different sound which I can most closely describe as "hum" around 3K rpm with my AT/boosted engine. I think it is normal and due to design. It mostly happens when I want to accelerate without downshifting. I think you just need to downshift one more gear to accelerate.

I have never heard one in real life so can't express an opinion. I will not use sound clips to judge exhaust notes since they can be dramatically different in real life.

Or humfrz is catching some Zs in the back seat.
This ^ but with the addition that it can happen when moving as well. The exhaust resonates at different frequencies throughout the power band. Something that may not be an issue at all RPMs can become a pain at others. Odds are the problem is something loose or touching that resonates at 3000.

OP, we're just having fun while waiting to hear back from you. My question about your location was serious. Lots of friendly folks here in the upper left corner. Second best would be to post a clip on youtube and give us the link.

Why the knit-pick on gender classification on a non-biological subject?

All I was trying to say is that it would be unusual for a pre-owned FR-S not to have some sort of exhaust modification.

Heck, even this ol boy has an aftermarket muffler.

Why?

Oh, I suppose it is a carry over from my teen age years ... the louder a car was ...... the faster it was .......

Oh, I've had my share of loud cars too. In fact I'd be hard pressed to think of a car I've had in the past that DIDN'T have an aftermarket exhaust on...however I've really enjoyed the lack of attention this stock exhaust provides me..there's a lot to be said for flying under the radar.. I had a Brabus for a while on my previous car (W203 Estate) and ended up going back to the OEM Eberspacher, because of drone, attention, and zero gain (horsepower-wise). Maybe I'm just getting old...dunno. The 2 or 3 horsepower I might get isn't worth the price in other areas any more..

I'm entitled to be irritated by inappropriate gender assignments. I get the same way about people giving their cars cutesy names. It's not a pet. It's not female. It's an it.

Don't let her hear you talk about her like that.

Ya she will start to hum and once a female starts to hum you are doomed.
