Reviving this thread.
I had the same issue on my 2” tops, figured it out: The spherical bearing that sits stationary in the shock top is two pieces, the spherical ball joint that the shock shaft mounts into and the base on which the joint travels radially. I found (on mine) when I took them apart that if I wiggled the ball joint up and down within its base it was able to move AXIALLY. A horrible design flaw, I should say. Spherical bearings are able to withstand tremendous radial load BUT NOT AXIAL, causing the bearing to wear prematurely. I want to try replacing this bearing, but it is a .0005” press fit so I’m afraid of damaging the actual shock top when trying to get the bad bearing out.
