Yep blows the doors off the others I am sure!

Unless you buy an auto and then it is exactly the same.

I predict they wont change much at all. and why would they? Toyota and Subaru have produced really good sales for this chassis as there are not many vehicles from other manufacturers that will compete with it. (ie: rwd, 2L engine, naturally aspirated, more than 2 seats, cheap)

sure almost all enthusiasts cry for more power, a turbo, better gearbox etc etc. by the time you have these features from the factory you no longer have what this chassis was designed for. cheap, low power, lightweight thrills.

but what we have bought is just a platform. a platform to make the car into anything that you want. that is why Toyota sell a base model in japan with only the bare necessities so that racers can buy one very cheap and get it ready to go on the track. I'm sure there are many zn6 race series world wide now.

so why change anything?

No no no a partnership with Mazda using the new rotary. I am sure I read that someplace already.

Based on the plans for Toyota and the Next Generation platform they are rolling out, there a couple of cool powertrains coming down the pipeline. We've got the 2.0t that is in the NX and IS right now, there's a new 2L hybrid powertrain as well as a 2.0t + hybrid powertrain.

I think the 2.0t with hybrid would be perfect for this car (it will add weight, but peak torque at 0 rpm would be nice).

This all depends on Subaru's continuing involvement and if they stay on board I'd expect a Subaru powertrain possibly with some of Toyota's hybrid system integrated. But I'd say expect some sort of electric motor involvement. Likely also another nudge upmarket. Maybe knock on the $30k base price point and a bit more of the GT86 features standard.

Consumption and emission regulations are constantly changing and will be much stricter to design a sports car planned for 2020+. I am not sure if Toyota has the will to invest for a second time an enormous amount of money and develop a new powertrain. Fact is that Toyota is paying. Subaru doesn't have enough financial strength to invest on such project. When they started working with this platform, Toyota didn't have any sports car and wanted a strong comeback. Now they have in their plan different cars like the Supra, the S-FR and the Yaris WRC. I believe a 2nd generation 86 is now much lower in their list ...

Let's enjoy the 2017's and wait for sales numbers to come out.
More than likely if there is a version sold with a subaru badge it will have the boxer engine. That's just how it works in subaru world.

Subaru was already confirmed to be on board by Tada-san, so Boxer motor is all but confirmed IMO.

I honestly hope they don't mess with the formula too much. I'd love the same basic design with a 15-20% power bump, a 7-12% weight decrease, same dimensions.
Even at the conservative end of those percentages it would make it noticeably faster, without changing the nature of the car.

Development. Gran Turismo Sport is also in development and keeps getting delayed. I think the refresh will flop and Toyota will begin to want to push out the Supra more and not push out a 2nd gen.

Discontinuation.

<700 units per month this year, refresh will only be a minor incentive to upgrade so I expect it to drop below 1k units per month by the end of 2017 and quickly slip to <500 by 2020.

I think that's the only way I'd buy another 86 is if it was powered by magic triangles.
