How is the screen responsiveness/quickness of the menus? I am considering one of the newer, yet less expensive versions.

Similar responsiveness to my iPhone 6 so pretty amazing. Carplay issues aside I'm really impressed.

Using the car joying JQ123 Android HU. As long as you use an EQ other than built in one, it sounds pretty damn good. Apps seem to work well.

I'm looking for really high quality sound upgrade but I've never done an audio mod to a car. I'm probably going to have Best Buy do it - not looking to spend an arm and a leg but I have no clue what to get (I use Android w/ a Nexus 5X).

I just care about Bluetooth and crisp beats

brz install is easiest ever. Even if you just ghetto twist the wires on the harness it will blow away the oem quality.

I'd at least go to a dedicated audio/security shop. Could maybe have them do some additional improvements.

Isn't it best to buy the hardware myself and then have them install it?

Yes, except the problem in this case is who "them" is. Best buy etc al. Are notorious for low end gear at not so low end prices. You'd do much better sticking around here, getting higher quality gear for your money, then finding someone to install it.

I'm not sure that made sense... I just woke up. Stick around here for gear tips and have someone better than best buy install it. There.

if you're gonna have a shop do it why not give some love to a local audio shop instead? chances of finding good/reliable installers is much higher than at a best buy.

anyway here's my stereo that i like to show off every once in awhile. It's hardwired in for audio and power and is running through a single din unit that sits behind it. aftermarket speakers, amp, and sub installed myself. not quite complete, but pretty darn close and super functional.

unfortunately it isn't jailbroken anymore. still waiting on someone to release one for the current verison of ios, but once they do i'll be using this same interface again. also this last picture is the oldest picture of the trim piece i made. it has since been redone multiple times and looks far better now than before. this picture is just to show the potential interface possibilities

It sounds pretty good bluetooth wise, nice and clear. Though heavy amounts of bass don't come across the stock speaker system well, but I haven't messed with the EQ. Features are decent, USB port 1.5Ah charging, Voice button works great for Google Now voice commands. Allows for color customization on the buttons (blue or amber LEDs.) Has a wired microphone.

There are a few gripes, the lever holding the phone in place is flimsy and my phone was flying out, but I modified it with a piece of sugru plastic molding to hold it in place and I'm happy with how it works now. The unit also came in running the demo mode and also had an annoying button beep but fortunately I was able to turn them off. Also the only way to use the menu functions is to use the included remote control.

Also my phone was actually pretty incompatible with it, but I fixed with with an easy hack as well. My Nexus 5x has its power button on the side, so I couldn't turn the screen on with it in the cradle. But I found that I could use an app called Wakeup Touch Nexus which uses the photosensor to detect my hand waving to turn it on. Works great. So be aware that in order to use this kind of head unit that you'd need a front-facing power button, a tap to wake function, or the app I mentioned.
Dude that is pretty sick. Gonna have to look in to that

I just ordered the Clarion NX706 Head unit. It has an optical output so I can run that to my DSP for a really clean signal.

And like others have said, please go to a local car audio shop instead of Best Buy to purchase/install your equipment if you're not going to do it yourself.

I do not see the point of Android Auto. For me a major reason to switch to Android based HU is so that it won't eat up my phone's battery and that I won't have to mount my phone anywhere.
For the most part I use navigation on my car and for things like music BT works perfectly. I can already install Google Now, Maps, Yelp, etc on the Android HU and once you enter your account info, it's the same as your phone...
Am I missing something?

I may be a little odd, but I took what some may consider a step backward.

I wasn't satisfied with the 2016 head unit at all and didn't really like the idea of a touchscreen without steering wheel controls. I have other touchscreen units in my 2007 Ram and 2015 Tacoma, but I have steering wheel controls with them so I could advance through presets, change mode, etc without paying much attention to the screen.

Instead of a touchscreen unit, I opted for a double din Pioneer FH-X830BHS. It has all buttons and knob so I can operate by feel.

Since I have a 2016, I had to buy the 2015 Series Blue dash pieces to get everything to look right. I also had to splice for the amp trigger. The BRZ is small so loss of the backup camera wasn't an issue.

When I bought the head unit, a SiriusXM kit came free with it so I installed it and connected through the factory antenna. I don't subscribe but it was free and the XM free weeks are pretty neat.

Overall, I'm very satisifed with the unit, it sounds great and does what I want.
