Cool

That sucks. Good to hear you survived! Since you had the Monogram spec are you going to get a BRZ as a replacement? If my car should ever suffer a violent death, I would probably go with the BRZ.

My current build is 'The Birth of 86'
I hope the day never comes that I have to rename the thread to 'The Death of 86' RIP

If you can afford it, you should get an Audi R8! This would be the next best thing!

I'm sure better days are ahead of you in your driving future!
Peace and should your 86 rest in peace.

That has nothing to do with what toysub was suggesting.

Sorry about the car. It happens.

Sounds to me as if the water was already there and OP drove into it. And before anybody criticizes, people drive into floods all the time because they can't actually see that the road is flooded, especially when it's dark or raining hard. One minute you're driving along. Then you're floating. Or sinking. Yeah, sometimes people try to cross when they shouldn't, but a lot (if not most) of these water rescues in Texas were people who got into the water before they realized what was happening.

When I lived in New Orleans, it was a regular thing for people to drive into floods and hydrolock their motors. What happened in Houston, NOLA people just consider Tuesday. I always took the Jeep out if I had no choice but to drive when weather was bad, because I knew the BRZ was at greater risk. Luckily I lived on a street that was a few feet higher than the surrounding blocks, and the vacuum trucks had recently cleaned our sewers.

Buy it back, disassemble it, dry it out, put it back together, and drive it like nothing happened.

Concrete. Dallas. Springtime in Texas. Sudden torrential rains. A bad combination. Hopefully your insurance company will cover most of the cost of replacement and you'll have a speedy recovery.

It was nothing like your situation, but I tried to cross a "low water" crossing near Austin a few months ago with only about an inch of fast-flowing creek water over the road. I distinctly felt the car begin to drift with the stream. Got through fine, but it scared the crap out of me. These cars are just too low to handle any amount of ponded or flowing water.

Sucks to hear about the car, at least you can swim and you're living to drive another day.

It's not just these cars. Even the brodozers will float right off the road in a few inches of water if it's moving fast enough.

I know you may be joking. But I had a friend with a 350z that was salvaged from a flood and it's built for track use with BBK, exhaust intake and tune. But he had small electrical issues, that would end up costing him quite a bit to finally get sorted out, it's a fun car to drive when it works. When it rains the stereo loses power or the car stalls it's hilarious, and at night even after replacing the entire headlight assembly the exterior lights and dash clusters will cut in and out. All of it was tied back to an ecu and wiring harness needing to be replaced which was quite expensive to get replaced, almost $3000. After that it drove like new, however it occasionally smells a bit musty and although most of the interior is new there are areas underneath the carpeting that could use an alcohol bath which is what he's doing and dynamat placement, also parts of the car rattle and squeak more than the FR-S because it's needed to be taken apart so much.

Bottom line, it's only worth it if it's not your daily driver

This is what I was thinking. A flood-salvaged car can be a nightmare. Better just to let it go and let insurance help get another one.

Nope, disagree. Totally different scenario if you get to it right away and are thorough. You have a golden opportunity if you play your cards right.

According to Weather.com

Six inches of flowing water can knock a person off their feet.
  • Water flowing at 7 mph has the equivalent force per unit area as air blowing at EF5 tornado wind speeds.
  • Water moving at 25 mph has the pressure equivalent of wind blowing at 790 mph, faster than the speed of sound.
Add to that how low the car is and yea, your car becomes a canoe before you realize what happened.
