Interesting tag TJF. I used to work in a job where TJF had a very poignant meaning

No they don't and yes they are but this is the first time I have ever seen the 'Black Box' mentioned in a news story. Fatals are a regular occurrence police investigate so why make mention of a 'Black Box' in this fatal that involved an 86?

Police investigating a fatal accident is one thing. Insurance companies using the data to refuse a claim is another.

Technology is great....Up too a point. Then it is becomes worrying.

I have a feeling that we did the same job, just in different places.

I found out about this about 3 months in owning my 86, It all started when I had a rattle in the back of my car.

After using our very helpful 86/FRS/brz resources trying to find out what the rattle could be, one chap in the US had the same problem and guess what, it was the black box.

It is located under your rear parcel shelf. He managed to secure it better, but do not try to remove it. You will be in a whole world of hurt as it is a criminal offence. FYO I still have the stupid rattle, Toyota is not having much luck fixing it.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried the fix outlined in this thread?

Sounds like the exact issue you have and its a 30sec fix. Worth trying anyway.

Traction control/driver "aids" are not compulsory as far as I know (correct me if wrong). So how would those systems being adjusted/off have any bearing on the case.

Plenty of people kill themselves and others in vehicles that don't even have those systems and with cars the systems are full on. Shit i spun my car with everything on, in fact i was trying to give some power but it cut the power and grinded me to a backwards halt.

As long as there is a meaty nut behind the wheel shits gonna happen.

How is it a criminal offence to modify or remove something that you own ?

Just by owning something does not mean you can do whatever you want with it. Removing your seat belts, cats, airbags and several other components will make your car illegal to drive.

Some are more serious than others. Removing a cat and failing emissions makes your car illegal to drive and can potentially void your insurance. The cops will just send you to have your defect fixed and a fine.

If however you remove your airbags and you are in an accident and somebody gets hurt your insurance will not cover you and the boys in blue will be all over you. The EDR is connected to your airbags and other components that can not be removed or modded for street use.

This is an interesting article on EDR's

Anytime anyone ever says,"if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about." You need to do lots of worrying. That sentence is a huge indicator of pure evil intent. If you really want to rid the world of these things start a campaign and bug your representatives.
