Im kind of in the boat where if you want something, you get the best version of it.

Something like a base model Cayman, I don't know if I would. (Hell I don't know if I would Porsche in general). It feels like compromise. But of all the Porsche models I think I would definitely get a Cayman over a Boxter or a 911.

I honestly don't think i'd want to get a base model anything unless I really wanted it and I don't feel the extras are that big of a deal.

Oh and in regards to Porsche, the running costs of that brand scares me a little so i'd be hesitatant to pull the trigger unless I have a ton of money socked away somewhere.

Yep that day was pretty intense. The Porsche guy tried twice to accelerate from middle speed and he stayed behind. Then an Audi driver who was following us tried to chase me with more speed and in the end he backed out too. Keep in mind that it was in the autobahn with no speed limits and everything was legal. In general, Germans are pretty sensitive when they see foreign cars (not made in Germany) and will try to test you. However, I am not stock and I am pretty sure the Boxster was stock and had an additional person in the driver's seat meaning that it had more weight.

Sounds like he didn't know how to drive

Arent you also the guy who was claiming to have the equivalent of 250hp with simple bolt on mods and weight reduction?

The most important question

It was a very memorable experience several years ago when I got to borrow a family member's 987.1 Cayman S for a few weeks when I came home on leave to visit.

If you can afford to own a Cayman and keep up with the running costs, do it.

Even if I could comfortably afford a Cayman right now, I'm sure quite sure I would trade the BRZ for one just yet. I still have much to learn as a driver, and I enjoy tuning the car and chassis, extracting as much performance out of myself and the car at autocross. If anything, I'd probably keep the BRZ as the "fun" car, and I'll get a Cayman as the daily driver. When I can afford to have an even nicer daily driver, then the Cayman replaces the BRZ, and I'll get a comfy and fast dad-wagon or sedan.

I would not. Save and get both. I have an 04 WRX and a 16 BRZ. Once the BRZ is paid off next on my list is an air cooled 911 (need recession for prices to come down) or a used Cayman as a weekend car. I will daily all of them and enjoy life.

A local tuner dynoe'd my car and got around 190whp. I can see similar numbers in logging by checking the air flow ratios. A base boxster 981 will give around 220-225whp. It is a 30-35whp difference, BUT my car weights around 2600 lbs and a stock boxster with a PDK weights around 3000 lbs. Overall, it is a disadvantage to have a 6-cylinder engine and a heavier transmission (almost no-one will get the manual here). At that day the Porsche was carrying one more passenger, so it was even more heavier. Don't underestimate the weight difference. That's why I said in past that my car feels like a 250hp. And I don't know what means for you "simple bolt ons". My modifications were in the range of 3 times the cost of fitting a supercharger and still staying legal. The latter is not that easy, because I could not fit a catless header. I know that overall was not the best value for money, but for sure not simple bolt ons.

I just wouldn't touch a used german car, the reliability issues are far too numerous and far too expensive when they do break.

You can modify a base Cayman and go from 229whp to 246whp, but it is expensive and I believe the risk is bigger. This guy could find a very low mileage car like new, so he was more lucky:

But as said above, a good modified 86/BRZ vs. stock base Boxster/Cayman doesn't really worth it apart from the premium feel. For me, better to stay with the 86/BRZ.

I don't know how the gearing is on the base models but in the GT4 and GTS ( I know we are not discussing these but maybe the lesser models share the gearing and I can't be bothered looking *shrug*) 2nd gear runs to 84mph!!! In Aus the maximum legal speed limit is 68mph. Maybe this works on track but that fact alone pushes me away.

Great point. No fun if the only way you ever get to shift is to short shift. I drove a Ford GT once on a very small tight road course (Gainesville Raceway). It did like 72mph in 1st and 90 something in 2nd. On this tiny little track you never even got out of 2nd. Fun car to drive but you would end up in jail if you ever got to the top of 3rd on public roads. One of the things I love about the Twins is how busy the gearbox is.

Same. Cayman is logical... maybe not the base model..

One of the least favorite features of my car. All Cayman S, GTS, GT4s have the same transmission with same gear ratios (across all generations - 987, 981, 982[718]). My CS has a lower redline (7200 vs 7800) so 2nd gear for me tops out around 75 mph.
