Oh... wait... I spoke too soon.

Do you think I should take the time to take it out properly or just work it out with a hammer?

There are "buttons", but they're touch, not a physical switch.

If you hold down 'volume down' for a second it mutes. Still... I miss the best volume interface ever invented. A simple radial knob...

Given that you had a shop to do the install I doubt you'll have a lot of the details, but if you could answer a few questions that would awesome!

1. Were you able to maintain the factory USB outlet? Not too concerned with the aux-in jack, but if it's possible to maintain the original USB port that would be a plus!
2. How did your shop set up the microphone?
3. What's the microphone quality like? I can't tell if the horrid voice recognition with the OEM setup in my BRZ is because of the HU or the microphone (maybe both?)
4. You mentioned lack of physical volume buttons, but is there a way to quickly mute or pause audio? That I think would be my biggest concern.

Thanks for posting! Let's hope being early adopters doesn't come back to haunt us

Yeah I'd sacrifice a bit of aesthetics for functionality.

My Alpine mic is mounted at the top of the a-pillar and my conversations with Siri are less than stellar.

Would be great if there was a diagnostic mode on the deck to test different locations. Might be worth hooking up to a decent sound recorder and doing a bunch of test runs.....

Hey there!
Did you manage to recycle the standard usb and aux port near the start button?

First off, love this receiver! Quick question. Can you still text from the phone itself when connected to the headunit?

Yes. This head unit is awesome, And the audio quality is really high, even with original speakers.

Just got it installed an hour ago by the good guys at Druery Car Stereo.

Only had the drive from their shop to my office this morning, but so far so good. Beautifully responsive screen. Managed to take a call, listen to and respond to texts, navigate to work, and listen to music all in one trip. Carplay working as advertised.

The only thing that's going to drive me crazy is the lack of physical buttons / volume knob. No 'official' wired (or otherwise) control yet. But hoping one of the alpine wireless remotes is compatible. If so I'm going to bust it apart and pair it to some physical switches in the blank where the heated seat switches would live.

Quick snap doesn't do it justice...
Can you still send text messages from the phone itself when connected to the headunit? Or does it only allow you to send via Siri using CarPlay? Thanks.

CarPlay does not lock down your phone. You can still get to everything on the phone. This applies to any CarPlay enabled radio.

Can CaFi mirror an iPhone? The CaFi looks like a great unit, if you have an Android phone.

Thanks for the write up, I've been debating this head unit and might pull the trigger

Cafi doesn't really "mirror" your android phone (and consequently your iPhone either), it is a standalone android installation. I am sure there are apps out there that could facilitate piping your iphone view/functionality to the unit, though.
