Hmm.. Lets say enough to replace/resurface the entire thing.

And I didn't know you were a teacher. I had always thought you were a master metal person slash wielder.

Non-apathetic machinist. Master of nothing.

A couple nights a week I 'teach' basic conversational English and West-Coast Canadian 'culture' (with a subversive Northern twist) to mostly Japanese and the occasional Korean student in exchange for Japanese lessons.

Edit: engine question...

Um, usually once is no problem if it hasn't been badly over heated. The more metal that gets removed to correct problems the weaker it gets. (This is from domestic experience, and older imports like 22Rs. I think some new motors don't like overbores because of fancy cylinder liner stuff...)

Engine Overhauling probably involves changing worn parts and replacing fluids. It depends on the extent of what they are going to do. Some crooked mechanics might replace one or two parts and say it was a full engine overhaul. It's just a matter of you knowing what they're doing.

Definition from Wiki:

Overhaul

An overhauled engine is an engine which has been removed, disassembled (tear down), cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary and tested using factory service manual approved procedures. The procedure generally involves honing, new piston rings, bearings, gaskets, oil seals. When done by a competent engine builder the engine will perform as new. The engine may be overhauled to 'new limits' or 'service limits', or a combination of the two using used parts, new original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, or new aftermarket parts. The engine's previous operating history is maintained and it is returned with zero hours since major overhaul....

Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_tuning#Overhaul

However, as @Guff said, some crooked mechanic may charge you for a full overhaul but only do some little things.

Hope that helps.

Can't answer this, but can give my 2cents.

Save it up to buy BRZ. Why? You're in college, RB or SR 240sx is cool, but will cost you for a maintenance

That's up to you bro. A car is a large expense either way you slice it; you have a choice between making that a predictable/manageable expense or dealing with multiple miscellaneous expenses. Now you've also got to ask yourself if miscellaneous expenses are something you can handle given your currect financial situation as a college kid.

When I was in college that was killer, and having a project car was expensive. Often when something would break my car would sit for weeks before I could get the funds to take care of it. My advice would be to wait until you're done and get the BRZ; financing will help build your credit and warranty will help minimize miscellaneous vehicle related expenses.
