FT-86 / FR-S size dimensions compared to Genesis, Civic, Sction tC, etc

Compared to MR2 Turbo/NSX/RX-7/Miata? I've actually driven/owned those cars so it would be nice to see them compared.

Another just introduced model to compare the FT-86 to:

Hyundai Veloster:
Length: 166.1 inches / Width 70.5
Wheelbase: 104.3
Weight: 2584lbs


Notice the weight on the Veloster!!!

The FT-86 will be slightly smaller than the Hyundai so a curb weight around 2600lbs should be possible. Couple that with the expected 200hp boxer and the base model should be one fun little car.

I think you misunderstood me. I was in no way saying that I like the veloster or that it would be cross-shopped with the FT-86.

I was merely pointing out that both cars have similar dimensions and the veloster weighs only 2584lbs. That is good news for us because if Hyundai can keep the weight down on the veloster then, even with rwd, Toyota should be able to keep the FT-86 somewhere around 2600-2800lbs.

And comparing FWD to RWD is hit or miss. Remember RWD is infamous for being heavier . We'll have to wait and see the production version.

How much heavier (average) would a RWD car be compared to a FWD car? It can't be more than 200lbs heavier, right?

I would suspect close to 200lbs is about right. The Veloster has a semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension which is lighter than a fully independent suspension but heavier than a live axle. For example, the Mustang's live axle weighs around 125lbs, the independent subframe that was used in the 99-04 Cobra was closer to 250lbs. If I roughly guesstimate the weights, <125lbs for the fully independent rear suspension, +25lbs for the driveshaft and associated joints, the 2.0liter boxer is probably at least +60lbs heavier than the 1.6 liter in the Veloster based on comparisons with similar sized engines(Honda L15 at approx 180lbs) vs the K20/F20(240lbs). Than 200lbs sounds at least close. I don't know for certain since the 86 is a mite smaller than the Veloster.

So now you know why I think 2800lbs sounds about right. Obviously my numbers are not 100% accurate as they are based on second hand info but I'm not the one selling the car. The last generation Silvia was 2800lbs or so but it was an iron-block, pre-2012 safety regs in addition to being sold outside the US, and turbocharged. The RX-8 was 2900lbs in 04 and is closer to 3100lbs now but it's a full 4 seater and larger than the 86.

Ugh. But even with us knowing that the 86 is going to be a car smaller than most, the forecast doesn't look very bright (especially with increasing restrictions on safety equipment). I was hoping for the car to be around 2.5K lbs. I know nothing is certain yet until specs are released, but deep down I feel like it's just wishful thinking. One can still hope though, right?

About the Mustang's live axle vs IRS, I think that part of the extra weight of the IRS was from the fact that the 'Stang wasn't originally designed for it. So the subframe was probably bigger and heavier than it would have been if the unit body was designed for the different load inputs and mounting locations of the IRS.

So hopefully knock off another 50 lbs off the guesstimate. Optimistically 2750 lbs.

Pretty sad how that number can qualify as a lightweight car these days.

Made a not very good attempt at comparing the scale of FT-86, Evora, 67' Mustang, '10 Mustang. Note that the height and length are simular for the Mustangs, but its the belt line and fenders that give the car a lower appearance. All four cars are to scale.
