RAF 1994-98, Pilot (Trainee)

Broke my leg in 18 places in year three of training, and was told that I could not fly their planes anymore for ROI reasons (need to be able to take 2 ejections over the course of your career, and with my bum leg I would only ever get the one). Makes sense, with their investment being $5 mil a year in training costs.

Since I could not finish my minimum term for 'technical' reasons (My leg is fine, had orthoscopic surgery and walked out of the hospital), I ended up transferred to the Army for some reason. BIG difference! Essentially had to start over, did not enjoy it, got out the next year.

Always missed flying, but drove motorcycles for 20 years to get it out of my system. Lately, because of the other people on the roads, I have had fear when I am on the bike, so I got the FRS to keep me safe, while still having fun.

LOL I went from Corporal to LtCdr with 10 year off in between so when you do go for promotion just go all out!

The US Marines have the stupidest promotion system in the world lol. You can literally be the most amazing and bad ass war hero in existence but if you're a specific job you might not ever see a promotion. Especially as a reservist

Ever hear of Terminal Lance lol?

Dunno exactly how it's done in the Corps but I do know how it's done in the Navy. All depends on how many people they need for each type of job, no?

That was back in The Great War when battlefield promotions were necessary to fill sudden gaps in leadership though.

Was the opposite condition for me. The reserve position required a rank above Lt (N) so started as an Officer Cadet and took a two week course and bang was a ASLt, two more week course and boom SLt and so on. Did it in a year an a half. Looked funny as hell to be that rank with my one lonely UN Peackeeping ribbon and clasp. Canada doesn't give out ribbons like crazy so they are rare to start with but to not even have the 12 year service one looked odd.
