Its mainly because of the archaic OEM ---> Region Distributor ---> Independent Dealer system. In 15-20 years, dealerships will be service centers and places to pick up your new car after you buy it online directly from the OEM. At least hopefully that will be the case...

No VIN yet for me and I'm #1 at my dealer. If a boat does come May 16th then hopefully by my birthday on the 17th I'll have a VIN as a present!

Just like how it is in Europe and Asia. Dealerships are usually very small and have only a few cars on in the showroom. You go and literally in and pick out every little option and detail sepreately, like how it should be. Unlike the US where they "package" options for you, because we're stupid. LOL Then you go in and pick the car up when it arrives from the manufacturing plants.

I doubt that we will ever go in that direction here in the US. The dealership network are too powerful to allow that to happen here in the US.

At some point an OEM will do it here and the cost savings from overhead will give it a competitive edge over the others using their old system. It will take a while, for the reason you state, but I think it will happen. The internet has already taken away any reason for someone to just lemming onto a lot and buy a car. Why would anyone do that when they can go on Truecar and get a fair price with no hassle? Or at least deal with a good internet sales department, with lower overhead costs and prices. Ignorance/stupidity/fear of computers are the only reasons I can think of. At least two of those will go away over time.

called SoA this morning....no VIN for my VON!

The I try not to think about this car, the more I think about it. Everyday, it's checking this forum and google news. Arrrrgh!

Let me test drive it already so I can make up my mind if I really do want it.

Oh well, patience is a virtue as they say......

To give an update, I got an email from my dealership today with an estimated delivery of 5/18! I'm the first pre-order (pre-ordered on 3/1) at Carter Subaru Ballard, which is on the west coast.

They've been trying to revamp the dealership system since WWII.

It's a sad truth, but saying the current dealership system with price haggling will go away is like saying Autos will kill Manuals, or that Consoles will kill PCs. There's always evidence that it could happen, but it never really does.

I've sold cars before. A dealer would loose to may "emotional" sales if they didn't keep an inventory of cars. A lot of people buy cars on pure emotion. I've seen it time and time again. Dealers know this. It's one reason sales people use pressure tactics.

Good to hear people up here are getting VINs. Although I get the feeling Carter is probably getting a lot more than Peninsula Subaru
