I built a nice vented paint booth so can skip the respirator.

Still should use a respirator. I use a paint booth as well and the stuff still escapes into the air. If you use automotive lacquers, that stuff gets absorbed through the skin and deposits itself in the lungs. Especially that nasty 2K clear

I don't do much with lacquers since it is almost exclusively military flat acrylics. Compared to all the other things I have inhaled over 60 years some extremely minor model paint fumes are the very least of my worries.

Saw that paint booth. I think I watched a review video the other day of an identical booth a week or two ago (popped up in my recommended watch). Looked like it work, but was noisy as hell. |

For the seasoned hobbyist here, what are your thoughts on the quality and realistic detail of the cars/models between Tamiya and Aoshima? Not gonna lie, I'm looking at the R34 Z-Tune. haha.

I have only built the one Aoshima BRZ kit (which wasn't even for me) and have built no Tamiya car kits. I don't think you can too far wrong with either though. The only reason I picked the Aoshima kit for the BRZ was it had the full engine and drivetrain.

For the R34, I don't think either brand has an actual engine and drivetrain. The trans and bottom of the engine block are molded into the chassis part for both. I do think there's a company that makes the RB26, and I think you just cut out the engine block portion and glue the (assembled) engine in place, then cut out the hood. From some "stock" pics that I was looking at on Hobby Search, both look good, but the Tamiya looks slightly more real to me. But then again, it could have just been who ever built the examples, cuz the R32 I'm building doesn't exactly look as good as the example pics. |

ToldyaToldya Your next one will be a bit better and then the next a bit better yet. I don't do a lot of cars and even when I do they are usually the really old reboxes of AMT or Monogram kits since I do cars I had and in the condition they were in when I had them. This means no shiny paint but lots of simulated rust! I was at a hobby shop in Toronto last week because I haven't been able to find the sanding sticks I like even on line so thought I would give them a shot. He told me that many basic items are hard to get right now because the hobby has taken off like crazy since everybody got locked down.

But yeah, glad I didn't get the AutoArt 1:18 and try repainting that. Don't think I can do that just yet. |

Yep the engine kit is by Hobby Design. Had a few of their kits in 1/18 when they used to make things in that scale.

Even old, broken models can be given a new lease on life! Ever thought about taking one of those old ship models and making it a shipwreck diorama? Half the ship with broken masts buried in sand...

I have a large titanic that I built about 90% of and lost interest back about 25 years ago that will be turned into a wreck some day.
