I went to Mt Lemmon this morning before coming back to Phx. I spotted a Raven FRS on the I10 and waved, not sure if he's on here though...

Anyone want to sell their stock tires? Got a buddy that will buy them for the right price.

So, I've though about being stupid and getting some 16" wheels that fit the '05 WRX (since our hubs are basically the same) and throwing some super sticky tires on them for the occasional hooning (LM autoX, runs up mt. lemmon, random parking lot stupidity) and figured I'd ask the collective wisdom of you fine folks.
I'm a bit wary of going to a smaller diameter tire, but I shouldn't have fit issues on width because the AUS GT86 base model comes with 16" wheels and the same size brakes we have. Obviously back-spacing COULD be an issue but if they fit the WRX brakes for spacing they SHOULD fit our car. Tires in 16" get cheaper too, and that would solve the daily driver tires vs fun times tires problem.

Thoughts? Kevin and Brent (and those of you that have autocrossed in the past) please chime in if you have an opinion, since that's part of the reason I'm leaning this way.

I just watched a thing on tires for the fr-s and they said the 16" rims with sticky tires gave them the best results on the track they also said the 18" rims with sticky tires where worse than stock because of gearing issues with the Trans. Obvious no real experience with this car because I'm still on stock rubber.

Insofar as scca rules are concerned, you would be STR because STR allows any size tire. I would guess it would slow initial acceleration, but allow higher speed in 2nd. (I am basing this idea on my experience with bicycles). Your turn in would be quicker, but the car will be more lively/twitchy. Brent probably knows better. I just run two different wheel/tire set-ups. It is money up front, but it keeps autox tires from heat cycling because of daily driving.

Since there has been questions here are daytime some daytime pics and a repost of a nightime shot. they look quite untinted in direct sunlight. I kind of want mine slightly darker but idk.

And for the record the swirls on the paint are gone. Car wash scratched it and ran out of daylight so its been fixed since pics. And the flash brought out more of the chrome trim then you actually see. Those who have seen them can attest to that.

First off, if you want to play with diameter and offset math, check out the calculators on this page. (down towards the bottom)

16" wheels could work, I think we're all seeing a lot of people going to 16's for winter tires. I suspect there are a couple caveats for performance use. I'm assuming that you would want to keep something close to stock diameter. (If not, throw most of this out the window) What you're probably going to want to look at is a 225/50R16 size, as it's commonly available and only .98% larger than stock diameter and you'd get a bit more width. The Aussie GT spec car gets 205/55R16s which may be a good choice if you get 16x7 rather than 16x7.5.

Tires are typically thought of as part of the suspension in that the deformation of a tire adds to the total movement of the suspension, so a higher-profile tire would add some softness to your overall setup. Turn-in feel *may* also be a bit more vague, depending on the tire. Something like the Star Specs would mitigate a good deal of that, as they are renowned for their stiff sidewalls. Some experimentation with tire pressure may also be useful.

As for availability and price, the Hankook RS-3s and Dunlop Star Specs (the two favorite auto-x tires) are both available in both sizes I mentioned, however, don't count on performance tires being a lot cheaper in the 16" sizes. The Hankooks are about $16 cheaper per tire (225, 205 is $9 less than 17s), however the Star Specs are only $3 cheaper in 225 but $23 cheaper in 205, and the Continental ExtremeContact DWS are the same price as the 17" version. Given that the RS-3s and Star Specs should be replaced by new versions next year, I wouldn't be shocked if all the prices changed, so it's probably not the best data to make a long-term decision with.

If you decide to go with a smaller-diameter package, then as Kevin said, turn-in will be sharper and the ride will probably be a bit more lively. Your acceleration would improve with the decrease in diameter, but your top speed would worsen. So with a 215/45R16, you'd be doing 56.6 mph at the top of second, rather than 59 mph (I think it's 59 stock, may be a touch more, but you get the idea). What's better for auto-x, acceleration or speed? I have no freaking clue, since I've seen people choose tires in both directions.

Personally, if I was in your situation, I'd get 16" wheels and tires with close to stock diameter and use them for daily driving, since iirc, you have stiffer springs in your car. The taller tires would help to soften it a bit for daily use and the original wheels could be used for performance tires. Of course, I don't really care too much about how my wheels look so I'm fine daily driving on smaller than stock wheels. Your mileage may very.
