Do we have reliable info that Yamaha is not developing the heads?
Or, maybe they will for the second-or-third year of production engine updates, and the TRD model will be an N/A Beast!

My dream swap has always been to shove the drivetrain from an STI into my celica. For no good reason other than to say that I did. I didn't read through all 11 pages here, but I did see some people talking about the 2ZZ on the first page. Agreeably, the 2ZZ is torqueless and only now are they getting over 200whp out of an NA build thanks to a new intake manifold that one of the forum members came out with. Really, the only way to make gobs of power is through FI and swapping out just about everything in the short block. Even then, the highest horsepower 2ZZ Celica is a drag car built by Monkeywrench Racing and it tops out around 600 whp. For me, it's not really the ultimate horsepower that matters, but the power to weight ratio and a good 6 speed manual transmission. If I can get the FT86 to somewhere between 1:6.5 and 1:7.5 I would be happy. Even happier if the thing would redline at 8k rpm.

for that kind of price range(20~25k)
i won't be expecting something really powerful maybe an high revving engine with a 8k redline and maybe 180 hp with like 140 lbs of torque |

. . . . . . . . Wait, WHAT?! Zzyzx doesn't mass-produce cars for USDM? Still, cool shit. That looks like a SICK engine. I can imagine putting that in my RWD CRX when I manage to put that together. That thing wouldn't be a show-car, it'd be a show-off. I promise you that. |

Aaahhh. The fuel and timing on that thing must be right at the limit. You'd think they'd be using a higher CR since it's basically running on jet fuel. Jeez. Even so, it's still an achievement. But I think the subaru kids on the linked forum are getting ahead of themselves - saying it's putting out higher output than that of modded Honda engines. Even old dinosaur B16's have been dyno'd to over 200WHP, stock crank, no additional head porting, with only increased compression, cams, and bolt ons, and proper tuning all on pump gas!!! - and that engine is ~1 whole liter smaller in displacement. That is much more power per liter than the modded 2.5rs engine. --- Of course, the power curve would be MUCH different. The B16's i'm referring to only make power above 5.5k rpms (usually having a 9-10k redline with aftermarket valve springs), while this 2.5 liter boxer is throwing out some meaty torque right from 2k. But then again, that engine is HUGE in comparison to the B16.. (2.5 liters vs 1.6) Anyway, still pretty solid - but it *could* be much more solid with the addition of variable valve timing & lift (assuming it's in NA form), plus better flowing intake and exhaust porting. C'mon Subaru/Toyota, make the 2.0L boxer up with the times!!! |
