It's impossible to "camp" in a game that has kill-cams. If you know exactly where they are, you need to do something about getting them out of there (or go elsewhere). Flash bangs work good (and alert you if it hits them with an X on-screen) but may or may not do the trick. Smoke and grenades work well, as does a well-placed tac-insert for an unexpected double attack. You'd hate how I play because while I don't "camp" I generally float areas guarding and watching main entry paths and crossways. It's always easier to ambush someone running in than be the person running and have to twitch react. That, and I always hated shotguns and launchers of any kind. Powerful semi-auto all day. Preferably silenced.

As an aside, I wonder if the lower cost of PC games will cause one to eventually break even, especially when some tend to go on sale for 50% off a few months after release. Maybe some people don't want to build a computer, and that's fine. But to say that the cost of PC gaming is still prohibitive compared to console gaming is hogwash. |

I still get great performance and 60fps at 1080p out of a machine bought in 2005 for $400. The weird thing about consoles is as time goes on, games look and run better and better as they're specifically optimized for that system. On PC, without upgrading your hardware, games tend look or run worse and worse. At least that was my experience.

The next several years are probably the best time to pose this exact question. The game is changing as hardware becomes more powerful and APUs are more relevant, and a lot of current gen games will actually run fairly well on integrated GPU now. Hell, I run Grid 2 on my Surface Pro and hold 30fps, and it looks just as good as it does on the consoles. edit: Got curious. Apparently, yes, an older PC will play current games alright. My desktop is built out of my brothers spare parts, 5+ year old AMD Phenom quad core, 4GB DDR2 RAM, and two years ago I upgraded the video card to a Radeon HD 5850 for $150. Skyrim automatically put settings to "High" and I never had to lower them.
That setup cost probably about $600-$800, including a case and 25" monitor that will carry over when I upgrade (hopefully) in the winter for at most another $600 (shooting for the moon with mobo, cpu, gpu and ram) which should put me at a better performance than this new generation of consoles and last me for another 4+ years of running games on high settings. And now that SSD's are under the 1GB/$ margin there will be a huge leap in performance for many PC gamers. |

I know the PS4 supports swapping hard drives, so I hope it supports SSD. I'll do it! Has MS said anything at all about being able to change the HDD on their console? I assume it'll be like the last generation, and no. Ah well, I guess what it comes with is big enough for now. |

My experience through the late 90s to mid 2000s was to dance around the settings and juggle how good it looks vs how fast it runs. As newer and newer games came out, the juggle became worse and worse. I could have a gorgeous game run at 10-15fps, or a mediocre setting run at 60+. Once I got the game to run smoother, it looked no better than the console counterparts. I got sick of having to dink and fiddle with every setting on every game to find a good balance. Combine that with the awful wrist strain I get from the WASD layout and back issues I got from leaning hunched over for hours, I migrated to consoles exclusively. No regrets whatsoever.

![]() A controller beats a mouse and keyboard for FPS any day. What do you see all of the pro gaming shooters playing on? PC's? No. They play on Xbox's. Coincidence? I think not. Sure, you want precision of aim to be flawless, go with a mouse and keyboard. The accuracy is great. But it comes at the sacrifice of a whole game's experience. PC's are good for games like WoW, LoL, Heroes of Newarth, SC2, Dota2, etc. But not shooters. Consoles have taken over the shooter genre now. Go to Twitch.tv and tell me what you see everyone streaming. All of the FPS, Sports, and Racing games are being played and streamed on consoles, while other games as the ones mentioned above are on PC's. It's just the way the future is heading. |
