The gestation period for this thing has been so drawn out they only have three things left realistically to affect the 'hype momentum' for the first year: release price, give cars to the motoring press to do proper pieces/comparisons, get the first batch to customers for word of mouth.

Then we can all repeat this humming and hawing as we await the power upgrades.

So how many of the 48 states will be covered in the 'first 86'? 25-ish maybe?

Actually, for those who made the list, have you started thinking about the max you'd pay? I feel like the incentive for staying with the program, even though theres so much info we lack, is that we will get it for MSRP, whatever that may be, as the dealer won't be able to add markup or any dealer-installed accessories unless we let them and approve the additions in advance (per the contract). By waiting for the regular release, sure you have more wiggle room as far as choices and more reviews to base decisions off of, but then they are also free to add market adjustments and "performance packs" to inflate the price and increase profit margin...

Any thoughts?
Most people on here are probably going to order their car anyways. But yeah i see your point. These lucky folks just get to do it first. The way it's looking right now, they might not get theirs till June and we (the first ones on the wait list) July to August. But hey I could be off a month or so...so say May for the first 86 and June to July for the rest of us. Scion keeps saying spring so I will believe them.

And not everybody who submitted got picked to be on the waiting list so there might be a limit to how many they are going to be able to make....

So I went right away yesterday on my lunch break and dropped down the required deposit. Got a free Scion hat and a Toyota keychain. Scion rep has told them we'll get some pretty cool stuff with the car but didn't say what it was. Talked around with the dealers and the mechanics, while no real info was confirmed, they're expecting it to be around May/June at about 25k. I'm pretty stoked for this and can't wait to start driving it around!

Hmmm $25k I don't see it being that expensive unless it's going to include more standard equipment....

I wonder who is going to drop pricing first scion or Subaru?

I'm happy/shocked I got selected, but second guessing if I really want to be one of the First 86. It's not really that big of a deal, unless there is some undisclosed prize that is associated with it, or unique badging on the car. But what do you really get? The first real cars off the assembly line which are probably used for training everyone at the assembly plant how to put em together? I'll probably wait for the 2nd gen so they get some bugs out and possibly make some upgrades.

I'll probably concede my spot to one "lucky" person on the waitlist. Hopefully someone on here of course.

If you really think about it, it's super gimmicky and not even really a "prize". I'm going to put my deposit down and sign the paperwork right now, but I agree that it's not a big deal; just kinda cool that I got selected. Though, unique badging would be sweet. Really all being selected does is make my decision to purchase the car THAT much easier.

At the same time, you can't say 25k is actually a bargain either. I personally can't see anything really more than slightly more than the RS tC for it to be a competitive price to get other people to be interested in the car.

The RS 7 tC doesn't sell*, the same ones since day 1 release are still on dealer lots. It's just not worth the premium, everyone wants the base model tC.

*In Louisiana at least.

Curious to see how the fr-s will affect tC sales. If they are similar in price, which may be the argument for Scion making the in fr-s mid-20s, why would anyone buy a tC? Because its slightly larger? Cheaper to insure? Maybe.

It should have never been a Scion in the States!

The whole reason it IS a Scion is due to Scion's poor sales and market data shows they are not reaching the demographic they are aiming at. Most of the xB and xD drivers are 40-50 year olds. If this car doesn't sell, Scion may be getting the axe.

Well scion is really Toyota...they are sold in the same dealership and Toyota is trying to save scion. So the FR-S is a good fit for scion. Who knows the next supra might be a scion here in the states. Scion could turn into the performance arm for Toyota.

Subaru has already said $24k to $27k range...and it comes with hids.

Scion could split that price and offer something that has most of what is in the BRZ limited to justify a $25k price. Only time will tell..

Hey folks,

Just put my deposit down at the local dealership and what a pain in the ass. Nobody really knew what was going on and the scion sales manager told me that I was the 6th person to come in with an email saying they were one of the 86. I asked him if he was sure about that since 6 people out of 86 in the US were all scheduled to have their 86s delivered to this very dealership, and of course being completely pompous he said it was what it was and then he sent me away with another clueless sales person to take the deposit and assured me they'd let me know when/if my car came in.

Not wanting to spend time arguing with him, I did the paperwork and got on the horn with Scion corporate. After a decently long wait time I got in touch with 'Venus' and she was able to get everything straightened out. I ended up working with the main Toyota sales manager of the place and he congratulated me, made sure all the paperwork was in order and told me that he was sorry for the earlier idiocy I had to put up with and that I'd be well taken care of from here on out.

I'm definitely glad it is over and I'll keep my spot as one of the first to get one in Texas, but I think the short timeline of the promotion made for a tight window of communication between corporate and at the very least my local dealership and that definitely made for a lackluster experience for a 'winner' of a promotion.
