I am not an engineer, have never wanted to be an engineer but with almost 30 years of working in very close proximity with and managing engineers I have picked up a thing or two.
What I would do is what I do with most young, recently graduated, engineers I would torment you to no end until I was satisfied that you were actually an engineer as opposed to some guy with an engineering degree (they are not the same thing believe me) and then leave you alone to do your job and help you advance your career.
There is nothing more desperate than the look on a new guy's face when he comes to me with a proposal and I say "prove it" and then unplug his computer. That math you say you struggle with is very important when that happens.
Sounds like I am just being a pompous jerk but I am responsible for keeping people alive and in one piece and there is little margin of error when that is the goal. The ones that prove themselves thank me and get promoted. The ones that don't are just guys with a piece of paper that says they are an engineer and they are free to take that paper someplace else.

Its funny you say that, because at this moment @Ultramaroon asked me how my fluid dynamics were, and I haven't learned it yet. I am not above researching it late at night on my vacation though btw, whistler got shit snow this year. I am terribly disappointed.

I say I struggle with the math, because I need an outlet to vent lol. its mostly just moaning and groaning before I actually sit down and do it.

I feel like you've unplugged your fair share of subordinate's computers I didn't know you had it in you Flanders! I would be much more appriciative if you asked me to prove it just after I graduated because it would be much more fresh in my head than 10 years later thats for sure.

You would be amazed at how many new guys that should have it "fresh in their head" have no clue what to do without their computer. Tells me all they learned was how to use a program and many 12 year olds can do that.


If you have been an engineer for 10 years I will either take your word for things or smile and nod and get somebody else to do the real work 'cuz you know what you are doing or are a waste of time but I can't do anything about it.


Too bad about the snow. We could have shared loads with them.

Its unfortunately sad that I believe that. My math teacher was old, so he never liked calculators unless he was checking his work. That's what he taught us to use our calculators for anyway. Technically my line of work would require CAD for the design of the parts, but hey, a pencil and some graph paper, a ruler, and a protractor and a compass and I should be right as rain; it would just take a tad bit longer. I am slightly a perfectionist.
