Well, after talking to Mrs Mafia, we came to the conclusion that taking the BRZ to North Carolina this year won't be possible. It would be just too expensive. Taking the Mazda instead. It would've been fun, unless I can somehow de-tune it for better MPG.

It's all about context I guess. We're considering taking the FRS to the beach this summer because it gets twice the gas mileage of anything else we own.

I truly wish that I could get my wife to understand the concept of mileage so we could take my car on longer trips.
She can NOT wrap her head around it for some reason.
Her argument is that since I need premium gas it "costs more" to drive.
When her gas cost $2 a liter and she gets 11L/100km it costs $22 to do those 100Km.
At $2.30 a liter but 7.6L/100km it only costs $17.48!
No matter how much I show her that math she maintains it costs more to drive my car since I am not paying only $2 a liter.

Does it happen to be, your beach destination, Hatteras,NC?

Yeah the Mazda once it gets going on the highway will takes us there with one and half full refills. Close to 12 hour drive.

In hindsight, it is an AT, and is super comfortable. I just wanted to take something more...thrilling. The way there we're doing in two parts with an overnight stay in Virginia. The way back we one shot, and the wifey doesn't feel too comfortable with MT so yeah, no other option than a very reasonable one.

Sounds more like an excuse to not ride in the 86 than anything else.

There is that as well as she has never hidden her abject terror of riding in it but still hold out to the cheaper the gas the less cost to operate no matter what.

What kind of mileage is the Mazda getting? I'm surprised it is substantially different, though I guess over a 12 hour drive even a little difference becomes substantial.

I can think of two solutions:

Tell her you'll fill your car with non-premium fuel for the trip, then use it anyway. Just send her in for road trip snacks when you stop for fuel.

or

sneak out one night and put "Premium Fuel Only" stickers on her car and let her discover she's been mistaken the whole time.

35 MPG, takes Regular gas vs 33 on the BRZ, which is on a 93 tune. The Mazda definitely goes beyond that because Im more than positive we refueled twice. Once in New Jersey, vehicle was at around half. Then Maryland/Virginia, right before Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
I think we made it to Hatteras at around 1/4 or slightly above that. Considering we hit heavy stop and go traffic after Virginia.

BTW these are manufacturer MPG estimates. I can certainly say the Mazda can do 35MPG+. The BRZ currently says 26.7 for average MPG so .

Next time you fill up, save the receipt. Then fill up the other car and compare receipts. Of course you can play with the preconditions as much as you want lol

It cost me over $100 to fill up last week so that will not help the cause at all!
