If it really is a modified Impreza chassis, there's a fixed amount of mass that they're going to be stuck with. And the Impreza isn't exactly a super-light car. If this thing weighs more than my (lightened) Supra, it's going to be a no-go. Edit: This motor has Dual AVCS, which is Subaru's equivalent to Toyota's VVT-i system. The lack of direct injection mentioned is kind of odd. Edit 2: Quote:

ichitaka-san, your translation looks accurate.
the poster of the article didn't scan the first two pages of the article, although it doesn't contain much info so i guess i can see why he didn't. sorry for the cell phone pics, i don't have a scanner. according to the comparison box with the original ae86, it lists the weight as 1300 kg with an asterisk. no idea what the asterisk means. 1300kg would be about 2855 lbs? as others have said the 0-62 numbers do not seem to add up. they have the miata listed as 7.9 but as others have mentioned it should be in the low 6s. if the miata is in the low 6s and the ft-86 is faster than the miata as the article claims, that would mean low 6s to high 5s. so i wouldn't be too worried. as far as the article itself.. it sounds kinda fishy. the way they word the article, it sounds more like they are making educated guesses based on what has already been revealed, rather than having any kind of insider info. so it looks like i just wasted $8. so i dunno, i say take everything with a grain of salt. geneva isn't too far from now. |

Weight of 1300kg = 2860 lbs without driver. The final drive ratio will determine acceleration. The spec of 151tq@4500 and 197hp@7000 indicates a peaky engine comparable to the Mk1 MR2SC rated at 140tq@4500 and 145hp@6600. The MR2 had a 4.30 final drive and tested 0 - 60 in 6.5 to 7.0 sec. The Mr2 was 18.27lb/hp and the FT is 14.52lb/hp. Either the new Subie engine is a POS or the 7.7 sec time should be 6.7, as I figure a tall rear end ratio (3.90 - 4.30) like the MR2 will be necessary for the FT to have decent low end acceleration. Overdrive 5th and 6th gears take care of the gas mileage figures.

Even Rolls Royce would struggle to make a car this small (S2000 for perspective) weigh 1.9 tons.
I'm not trusting anything, especially Best Car, for specs. Geneva is, what, only a little over two weeks away? Patience, patience, patience. Edit: plus what Terrari said. |

Best Car always makes wild speculatory articles. I'd put zero weight into what they say.
The "shots" of the car are hardly real. For one, Toyota has to change the hood shape to meet pedestrian safety regulations, and it's identical to the concept in those renderings. To make the hood pass regulations, it can't be so sharply wedge-shaped, and will need to be softened and rounded out a bit. |
