Never. Flights are stressful, as is driving. The vacation itself may be relaxing but hectic travel plans and uncomfortable transportation is what ruins the experience. That being said, I've never flown First Class...

I don't.
My family could test the patience of a saint.
Trying to land anything (job) at this point, I'd love to go on a solo road trip.
Don't even get me started though on kids in planes kicking your seat.... Everytime I want to scream "SANTA DOESN'T EXIST."

In other news, I'm now designing the living spaces in my families home. We tried going to other (professional) interior designers but they wanted $5k (not the furniture and stuff) for JUST the design, and they wouldn't oversee anything.

Currently looking at different colors of hardwood, since our carpet floors are beyond repair. What do you guys suggest?

Dark wood is always the way to go.

A 1988 Celica just came on the market, pretty much a spitting image of the Celica I lost.

My wife started talking about taking our boys on a vacation last night. I've just never understood the point. You pay huge money to have "all the comforts of home" when you have that already, at home. I know there might be slightly different things to do there, but really is it going to make any difference to my boys if they ride bumper boats there instead of at the park 15 minutes down the road? I'd rather take the money and build a new back deck, one with stairs to the back yard. Or put an awning over our present deck so they can play outside if it's raining. Something that will last in more than just memories.

You can get some free software like this one to model and design the interior of your home. No need to interior designer...

http://www.sweethome3d.com/

Whatever color that you choose, just remember to keep it harmonized with the rest of your settings (furniture, paintings, decos...) Do not make too much contrast since you still need to live within, but not too blend that you feel you live in a mental institution (all white or black..)

Speaking of hardwood floor, dark color is always better than light one. The reason: it hides hairs and other dark objects better. Remember one thing, the wood floor is fairly fragile so it cannot take too much beating. If you ever dropped something on the floor, it will make a dent to the floor most of the time. You just need to live with it.

I used to do lots of trips within a year for vacation. However, never relaxed and refreshed and I was more tired than working. Now I would rather save that money for kid's education for the future. As the university costs on the rise, it is better to start saving early once they are ready for that to give them a good start. 3K saved now can do wonders in 10 years time frame for their future. Think about it.

I'm definitely more of a practical mindset, as well.
(That and I'm outrageously frugal, BUT!!!! I've been able to get designer shoes for $5. OHYES. )

I don't get all the people who spend thousands of dollars just for a couple of days. I'd rather put that towards a car, a down payment, or student loans of my own or my significant other.
A related topic, I don't get how people can spend $20,000++++ for 1 day, IE, a wedding. IT'S ONE DAY. Put that money towards something practical, man..

Maybe look for things you haven't tried in your own neighborhood? So many people are focused on the hustle and bustle, you sometimes don't see what's right before you. When I got lost one night, I found an amazing restaurant I haven't seen before, or tried before, and ended up having a great time.

Just switched to U-Verse! Got pretty much the same package I had with Comcast for $60 less a month.

Some of my best times have been from getting lost. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll see what I can dig up.

In keeping with the frugal nature of both of these posts; I started using XBMC, now I pay zero dollars a month for cable. And EVERYTHING is available. I'm presently watching the pilot episode for Third Watch. When this is done I'll be putting on the latest episode of GoT.

Our family does it all the time. Here's Dadhawk's Simple Rules for Relaxing Vacation:
  • Turn off anything related to work, and let them know that is what you are doing. Give your boss a way to contact you if they absolutely have to but let them know you will not be picking up right away and that your team can most likely cover it.
  • Go somewhere where you can split your time between doing nothing and doing something. Spend the morning doing nothing (sitting by a beach, lake, stream, whatever) and your evenings doing something fun.
  • If at all possible drive, take the back roads and stop at any place anyone thinks looks interesting weird, or just plain "huh, what is that?" Don't be in a hurry, the drive is part of the journey too.
  • If you can't drive, don't fly during prime time. Take a very early flight, or a mid-day flight.
  • Never eat anywhere you could have eaten at while at home. Always pick some place that is obvious locals go to, the food is better as is the service. If you like someplace go there more than once, its OK. The more sketchy looking the better.
  • Go to at least one museum, and one physical activity you haven't done in a long time each vacation.
  • If traveling with family find one "guy" activity the Ladies don't want to do, and do it the day they go outlet mall shopping. In the ...Hawk family there is ALWAYS one day of outlet mall shopping.
  • Have at least one night where you stay in, watch a movie, or play games. Talk to each other, catch up. You will probably find out you really do like these people.
  • Don't try to plan the whole trip out in advance. The best vacations are the ones where you don't really know what you are going to do, and don't really care if you DO anything.
Your mileage may vary of course, but that has always worked for us.
