And the whole thing repeats until the green light.

This is easily done with an automatic: brake, release brake and brake again. It is very painful for a manual car.

So in order to cope with this, one has to clutch in and in gear for these little movements...

For some reason, people would stop short on their cars/suv/van/whatever and then keep closing in in slow speed, as if they cannot determine how much brake they need to stop the car in the right place behind it. What is the deal of leaving a car length space in front of you while there are cars behind you?
Those situation, I never get closer. I usually keep my car in neutral and wait til I can actually can fully move.

that was basically going to be my exact response. leaving a gap in front of you is perfectly fine. no need to be within a certain distance of the car in front of you.

I just wait. It's OK to have a gap.

And since my brakelights are off, the people behind me don't understand what's happening anyway.

they would have another thing coming if they honked at me for leaving a 15 foot gap. it's never happened to me, and i've been driving for some number of years.

I usually brake way too early and "coast" into position way out. Hopefully by the time I get there the line is moving .

If the line is stopped it shouldn't matter how much of a gap there is unless we're talking car lengthS, it's better to have a good sized gap for timing anyway.

This has pissed me off more times than I could ever count. Especially when they are in the left lane leaving sometimes literally 2 car lengths of space between each car and I am stuck behind them not able to get into the turning lane. I sit there and watch my green light come and go and THEN they all start inching up. It pisses me off to no end. I have NEVER understood why they leave such ridiculous amounts of space. When I am next to people that leave 20-30 feet of space between them and the car in front of them, I change lanes into that spot just to take up the space.

There are also people that leave 1-2 car lengths of space when they are at the front of the line. I don't know how many times I have been stuck behind these clowns. The light will not turn green because it doesn't know we are there. ROAD RAGE!!!

If it's a 25mph speed limit yea 2 car lengths is dumb, but if it's 45 I dunno I appreciate the extra safety headroom. I hate getting tailgated on the highway, it's freaky as hell knowing that person will slam into you if you slightly touch the brake.

When you're in heavy traffic that's not really moving, I don't see what's wrong with leaving space. Not like anyone will get anywhere sooner if you dont'.

It's mainly blocking the empty turn lane and not triggering the lights that gets me.

I've had the not triggering happen to me in town before, at around 1:00AM with a bright yellow Lamborghini the only car in front of me. I waited through two light cycles of him 'not getting it.' So finally I get out of my car, walk up to the Lambo and knock on his window. Poor guy almost jumped into the passenger seat.

"You have to pull up to the light. It's induction controlled."

"Oooh. Ok"

I walked back to my car, he pulled up, light turned green.

Just to clarify: we are talking about the spaces when you stop at the lights, not the safety space while you are driving. Although I agree with you on this of leaving enough space while moving.
