I curbed my mustang at 17 by deliberately pulling the handbrake... in the rain... only scuffed the already scuffed underside of the bumper

I disagree.

You only hear about the ones that did curb their first RWD car, not the ones that were responsible and safe.

But when there's a foot of snow on the ground with patches of black ice it doesn't matter how careful you are. Again, possibly only in Canada?

Get a beater E30/E36 or a Miata as a starter RWD car and learn the balance. You'll make some mistakes in the process, and hopefully they'll be small ones. Making a small mistake in a brand new car would be a major bummer, while in an E30 it would mean picking up a $40 bumper from the junk yard. New cars like the FRS are built to crumple. It will not hide your mistakes.

Except the balance of those three cars is completely different. Plus only certain e30s are LSD and the only e36 with one is the M3. Driving open diff vs locking diff result in two different driving characteristics.

It all comes back to don't be a d**k You're just as likely to hurt yourself in any other sporty car. Don't be an idiot. Got to autoX, track days. Learn your car in a safe environment.

I did go way cheaper for a first RWD car. My 4Runner was free and it is RWD, it has a locked rear diff, and I know how to put it through it's paces.

I mean they are basically the same as an FRS.

I have always said go for getting one if you're able.
