When people asked me what I was doing for the 4th and I told them changing the oil in my car, they looked at me funny.

Update: The drain plug was obscenely tight from the factory. Here's what I managed to do to the bolt with a standard 14mm wrench before I got it off. Also fucked up my shoulder blade nicely from pushing it so hard into the ground.
Ended up having to tap the wrench with a rubber mallet!

This is your first oil change on the car period? Why not use your free ones?!?

Ouch! That doesn't look like any fun. Was there a washer on the drain plug from the factory? I don't remember there being one

if you plan on doing your own oil changes all the time, get the Fumoto drain valve. Makes it much easier and you'll never have to deal with that drain plug situation again.

Like Finch said, there was a drain plug gasket, but for mine it was actually attached to the plug itself. I had to pry it off the plug! Not sure why Subaru paints the oil pans after installing the plugs!
Yeah the Fumoto valves are awesome, but I'm confident I won't have to deal with a stuck plug in the future since I didn't torque it down to 5 million ft pounds when putting it back on today!

I do. But not all of them. Some are good some are bad. I think we have a thread about service departments somewhere around here?

I didn't have a filter wrench, so I drilled a hole in that mutha and jammed a screwdriver into it to torque it off.

Ugh, yeah that's a messy pain in the ass. I have a filter wrench so I was able to torque off the factory filter with ease!
