The shoes were named for the dough balls.
Cooked just right, they taste sort of like the foam soles.

To add to what has been said; Wiki says:

"The first recorded use of the word "hush-puppy" dates to 1899.[4] The name has no verified origin. Etymology is attributed to a variety of sources. One claims, with little verification, that it came from hunters, fishermen, or other cooks who would fry some basic cornmeal mixture (possibly that they had been bread-coating or battering their own food with) and feed it to their dogs to "hush the puppies" during cook-outs or fish-fries.[5]"

I don't think I've ever had a proper hush puppy that tasted like a foam sole....

For those that want to try and make some of these balls of deliciousness for yourself, here's a decent recipe that adds a little beer to the batter to crisp them up. Make sure your oil is at temperature so you don't end up with pure oil balls though.

Note, while they look similar these are very different from corn fritters which are made from wheat flour and corn kernels with maybe a dash of cornmeal.

What a proper hushpuppy looks like, don't forget the butter....

Haven't had them cooked "Just Right" I guess.
The brand stuck somehow, for whatever reason.

It is sort of one of those regional foods that just don't happen properly elsewhere for some reason.
The further north and west you go the worse they get.

Must be the same with grits and collard greens.

Love both, but don't recommend them together.

Grits are like tofu, they are just a vessel for something else, like butter, or red-eye gravy, or cheese, or shrimp, or combinations thereof.
