Thanks for the info on that, guys. Like I said, I'm woefully uneducated when it comes to hybrid technology now. All I know of Lithium batteries are the ones I work with in various hobbies, and I know those will burst into flames if the insides are merely exposed to oxygen or water (two elements that are always in abundance in our atmosphere), which is why I was worried about them. Gasoline might be more explosive, but it seemed to me that batteries are much easier to catch fire. So, ya know... battery gets punctured, exposed to oxygen, catches fire, fired spreads to gas tank, gas catches fire, it's the Hindenburg rolled up in a Hiroshima all over again.

That's where my brain was going with all of that. But like i said, I'm ignorant of such things. I'll trust the engineers on this one.

...provided they keep their filthy CVT transmissions away from my sports cars.

Lithium batteries are prone to catching fire or exploding if they're damaged. While it's of a minimal concern on a Prius (where every driver is slow-poking along while watching their real-time fuel computer), isn't that a bit of a safety concern for high-power sports cars? I mean, will we ever see a hybrid car racing in the JGTC?
There's a hybrid Prius running in the GT300 class this year. It apparently beat the GT300 BRZ in the first race.

Are you serious?! Ouch....

I kinda find that amusing, though. It's like picking a fight with an old woman: if the Prius loses, then so what... big deal. It's just a Prius. But if that Prius happens to win against anybody out there... they'll never live down the shame!

What if that old woman is a ninja? It's about as much a Prius as the NASCAR Camries are Camries, but it is using a production-based (loosely I'm sure) hybrid system.

I think "loosely" might be an understatement. The GT300 Prius has a proper transmission, so there's no way it's using anything that even remotely resembles HSD.

You mean overstatement?

How about as production-based as a V8-poweredPrius is?

Heh...

Edit: it's the Corolla that's a mid-engined V6

If it is equipped with a hybrid system, it sure as hell isnt being utilized in the same manner as a Prius. It COULD be used in a way similar to the older Lexus hybrids where the electric motor was more or less utilized as a power booster (which didnt help fuel economy a whole lot compared to the prius system).

Uh, sorry, a hybrid system is always used as a power booster. With the Prius, they were like, okay a road car needs a minimum acceptable level of power, and no more. The hybrid system gave them extra peak acceleration so they could reduce the gas engine's power.

With the Lexus models, it is also a power booster. Without it, they'd need a larger displacement engine to get the same levels of acceleration.

Basically, you need to get power from somewhere, but if you are going to be using brakes at all, or if you only need a lot of power for a short amount of time, there's a better way to get that power than from increasing the engine size.
