1- Too expensive even at $22k
2- Insurance rates will sky rocket
3- Image issues can go both ways
4- The original idea was to reinvigorate Toyota, not Scion..... they need a whole lot of other things to make it back to where it was
5- Scion works on limiting sales to 300k Total/ year.

Business man suit off.

I think you summed it up pretty nicely though.

I think a lot of the decision will also have to do with whether they want to use this car to recover Scion from lagging sales or to promote a sportier images going forward for Toyota. I personally hope it's the latter.

Agreed. The model has always worked: hub company: Toyota, luxury=Lexus, gen-x brand=scion. Toyota knows that if they don't get a boost in image soon, they will begin to unravel. Also, with the recent accelerator issue, an amazing sports car may be just what they need to "redirect" the public's attention...

WTF? Dude you're 30 and those cars were from the 80's and 90's. Just because you don't remember those years doesn't mean the rest of us have forgotten also.

And I'm pretty sure Toyota will be marketing this car heavily towards people like me and you, who are in their thirties, because we generally have the disposable income to be able to splurge on a completely impractical 2 seater sports coupe.

Toyota badly needs this car to fill their affordable- sports- car- void. As of now, they have no sporty model to replace the Supra. How many of us can afford Lexus' LF-A?

I think a better example would be IS-F.

And this car isn't even close to a replacement for the Supra. Two completely different design concepts.

I just came back from the Portland Auto Show (which was a complete joke) and ran into a Toyota rep who said Toyota "confirmed" that the FT would be a Scion but he also said we wouldn't see it till 2014 so... shows how much he knows.

Regarding the prospect of 3 different models, someone tell me the last time Motor Trend looked into their crystal ball and accurately predicted the release of a Toyota product?

According to them the Supra should have been out two years ago...

Motor Trend = glossy toilet paper

Maybe more towards IS250 or IS350? IS-F is in mid $50k while, 250~350 is in end $20k to mid $30k... but I do agree that IS series doesn't replace Supra. IMO closest to replace Supra is LFA... but you can buy 11 or so used Supra w price of one LFA. lol

a new Mk4 Supra is about $75k in today's money.

Closest bet? Next Gen IS-F Coupe / SC460 (if sport oriented)

Check this out:
http://green.autoblog.com/2010/02/02...ive-for-scion/

2 things form the article:

1) Apparently Toyota set a $20k price ceiling on Scion cars

2) They want to bring an AWD car to the Scion name

To me that seems like a tall order. AWD and under $20k? I can't imagine an FT86 that is AWD and non-turbo. I can't imagine a turbo FT86 less than $20k. Unless by that ceiling they mean base price, in which case it'd have to be $19,999.
