Manabu "MAX" Orido's personal 86 is an automatic.

I'm pretty sure there's no member of the Manual Master Race here who can beat that man around a track in comparable cars regardless of transmission.

If he picked the automatic over the manual there is clearly a good reason to do so that isn't "because you're not a real driver" or similar nonsense.

Probably still personal reasons for Max getting the AT. Let’s be honest here the best AT will beat a human shifting for any kind of racing. But many get the manual for the experience and engagement and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just get the one that make sense for you.

Not so fast. His personal MY17+ GT86 is a automatic with a HKS SC kit and 4.88 FD. His new personal GR86 is indeed a 6spd manual. Also his mentor Keiichi "Drift King" Tsuchiya's personal GT86 is again a manual. Manual is justice.

Imo they are the definition of sponsored content. Appreciate the lap times and videos but DK runs KW because "They're the best and they gave them to me." They're salesmen also so definitely a conflict of interest. I take these guys with a grain of salt. Who knows how they even got their cars?

They are race drivers first and salesman second for sure. Their shop car touge and track battles are great. Videos on their personal cars are like that of any decently large Youtuber. We don't get those deals.

The GTI and Elantra N are front wheel drive economy based cars. Are automatic users not supposed to enjoy rear wheel drive?

The LS300 is an entry level luxury car. Are automatic users not supposed to enjoy sports cars?

The mustang automatic weighs 600 pounds more. The Camaro weighs 300 pounds more. The challenger weighs 800 pounds more. Are automatic users not supposed to enjoy low weight?

Also, no matter what transmission you get this car is not loud. It’s not a noise regulation thing

Your argument makes no sense. The car is not made for the experience to be shifting gears and never was. This car does not have a boxer engine, limited slip differential, 50 50 weight distribution, and low weight for the main purpose to be shifting gears. If low horsepower shifting WAS the point of the car, you would have something more like a manual base civic or an si. A mildly sporty car that has a nice shifter but won’t blow you away with its handling or looks.

You all need to stop gatekeeping people from getting the car they want on a forum dedicated to the car
Thank you! This is one of the most reasonable, cogent arguments I've seen on this topic, written by someone who clearly understands the point of this car. Welcome to the forum!

"The numbers bear these complaints out. The run to 60 mph took 6.9 seconds (6.5 seconds with 1 foot of rollout), while the quarter mile took 15.3 seconds at 93.2 mph. Compared to a similarly equipped Subaru BRZ that we tested with a manual transmission, the automatic-equipped car was 0.8 second slower to 60, 0.4 second slower to the quarter mile and 6.7 mph slower at the quarter-mile mark. That's a whole lot of slow, especially by the standards of today's automatics."

I thought this was somewhat common knowledge when the car came out???

Gen1 FT86 AT = slowest
Gen1 FT86 MT = second slowest
Gen2 FT86 AT = Similar to Gen 1 MT, maybe a bit faster because its more powerful
Gen2 FT86 MT = fastest.

Isn't how fast it is irrelevant?

The standard disclaimer.... "If you bought this car to be fast in a straight line you bought the wrong car"

Enjoy the car AT or MT
