Hyundais and Kias had a bad rep for building cheap cars for too long, they were not "bad" cars, just cheaply built. I guess only time will tell,if these Genesis's are still running around like old Civics 10 years from now, then maybe hyundai finally got it right. |

Good point. Despite how far they have come up until now time will be the true testament to what they really have to offer.

you sir just made my day ..actually the car was much more stable at higher speeds to a point where you never feel like you're going too fast .. i ve been in shitty conditions more than once and i remember driving the car on a highway covered with 5 inches of snow going 60-70mph and the car was really stable despite the road conditions .. the brz is much less forgiving with it's short wheelbase you gotta be much much more careful so i'll need to take a chill pill this winter .. |

well im not sure about that .. when you start modding the cars both engines can stand around ~400whp in stock form before getting into trouble
mine did something around 400-410 whp on mustang dyno and the car ran with that setup for over a year without any problems |

The only parts that would be in question, are in-house drivetrain products (which are few and far between). Not saying that there is anything wrong with them at all though.
All the rest of the components are from the same suppliers that are making parts for our cars. I used to work for DENSO and we had tons of parts that went in to all Hyundai's (Genesis Coupe included). That includes starters, alternators, ECU's, sensors of all kinds, gauge cluster, HVAC components, etc. etc. This is the reason why all manufacturers are stepping up quality, and the gap is closing. They are using global platforms, and global suppliers. The days of in-house part procurement is almost dead. Better that way.

We've been casually looking for a new daily driver for the Wife. The Genesis Coupe was ruled out months ago before the constraints were as well defined. After a while we had narrowed it down to something that looks really good, has back seats, is AWD or RWD, is '09 or newer, costs less than $30k, and performs as well as possible. I test drove a lava FR-S and was completely underwhelmed by the power. The cheap feel of the dash was emphatically confirmed when I looked at the back seat. However, the car was undeniably beautiful and the wife was so excited about the car that I went with her to order one. Asphalt, Bespoke, 3M bra, etc.
Found out it would take months to get, so I came here and read about the half dozen or so issues this 1st year car is having. Condensation in the tail lights, low idle/CEL issues, issues with the DS window weather stripping/wind noise, chirping high pressure fuel pump, poor OEM transmission fluid, and some cars even coming with too little transmission fluid? Synchro issues?! I come from a world of synchro issues (broken a handful drag racing my VR4)... Then I saw the fleet of FR-S's with ~5K or less miles on them already on Autotrader - I counted 80 at the time. My buddy reminded me of the Genesis Coupe turbo. I then discovered the myriad of upgrades from the 2012 model. The 2013 2.0T made 275 hp/275 tq, had a better looking interior, a better exterior, and I had to test drive one. I've trained the wife well and she insists on a manual, so it wasn't easy to find a test specimen. When we found one, she liked the exterior a lot more than I expected (we both agree the FR-S looks better), definitely loved the interior, and was comfortable with the power. Unfortunately, everything about the shifter is wrong and her elbow kept hitting the center console, regardless of seat adjustment (extremely similar to the test drive experience we had in 2010 with the Sonata). It was a huge turn off to her (again), especially since she was already in love with the FR-S. I really enjoyed driving the GC2T There was some lag, but the power was perfect. She was right though. The shifting was a strange experience: It required excessive force to get over to the reverse gate, the shift knob had to go, the shifter seemed too far forward (I assume the interior was tailored to the autos?), the center console lid was too thick and too high relative to the shifter, and the transmission resisted a poorly rev-matched down shift more than I expected. Oh, and the throttle pedal being hinged at the floor was cause for complaint because of the wife's high heals, haha. Conclusion: Perfect on paper... We test drove the FR-S again the next day so we could really see the differences. Everything about the seats, center console and shifter is better in the FR-S. The car is undeniably more comfortable to drive. The turbo 4-banger with Mitsu 4G63 roots and the extra 75 hp / 125 ft-lbs really pulled me toward the GC2T. All the FR-S is missing is a turbo and a little more power. We intend to modestly upgrade this car together and I was really concerned that it would cost ~$6K++ to match the power of the Genesis. I didn't want to have to immediately upgrade the clutch, injectors, fuel pumps, or especially pistons. It wasn't until today when I discovered the AVO Stage 1 turbo kit that I emphatically got on board with my wife ~50 more hp through basically stock intake and exhaust - PERFECT. :happy0180:

i really liked the genesis coupes before the frs/brz came out. The frs and brz always intrigued me though when it was top secret collaboration between the two manufacturers. However, when I started car shopping, I just couldn't help but feeling like they ruined the newest genesis coupes look with the horrible vents and gaping grill. Also, the genesis coupe after looking long and hard at the interior it just seems tacky. the fr-s interior is no head turner either so that is really saying something. I kept feeling like the genesis coupes try too hard to copy the g37 and 370z instead of trying to be there own entity. They remind me of a bootleg version of those cars.

Im on Genesis Coupe number 2. First was a '10 2.0, new one is a '13 3.8. No complaints at all. No problems with either mechanically, no unscheduled trips to the dealer, build quality is excellent too.
I love the way the FRS/BRZ handle and drive, but I love the nicer interior and power of the GC. |
